F Á K L Y A L Á N G 33 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, this year will mark the tenth anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight during which time these two organizations, the Hungarian Freedom Fighters /Nemzetőr/ World Federation and the Hungarian October 23rd Movement are planning to organize a campaign to worthily commemorate those heroic events and its martyrs; and WHEREAS, the United States, in its traditional spirit of cooperation and amity, has pledged the energies of this Nation to a relentless war against social injustice, and tyranny; and WHEREAS, mindful of the importance of moral support to other peoples who are not as fortunate as we who enjoy freedom from tyranny, and also mindful of the importance of the 1956 events and its significance of the mounting pressure of communist expansion on this country; and WHEREAS, with the re-emphasis of the Hungarian Revolution we hope to strengthen the stand against communism as well as to demonstrate our solidarity with the oppressed Hungarian people. NOW, THERE, I, Harvey W. Moelke, Mayor of the City of Livonia, County of Wayne, State of Michigan, do urge all citizens and all interested organizations to solemnly rededicate themselves to the ideals of liberty and freedom for all peoples on both sides of the Iron Curtain and to express our sincerest hope that some day in the near future the liberation of the people of Hungary will take place. TEXAS On October 23, 1966, the free world will mark the tenth anniversary of the Hungarian revolt against Communist tyranny. Before Soviet tanks and guns again closed the iron curtain over Hungary, the people of this embattled Nation enjoyed brief freedom from the ruthless domination of the police state. They owed this to the courage of the Hungarian Freedom Fighters, and October 23 has become a memorial day in free Europe and the Western Hemisphere for these patriots. It is fitting that Texans, whose forefathers also fought for freedom, should join in the observance of this anniversary. THEREFORE, I, as Governor of Texas, do hereby designate October 23, 1-966, as HUNGARIAN FREEDOM DAY and the period of October 23-November 4, 1966, as DAYS OF FREE HUNGARY in Texas. MCKELDIN DESIGNATING SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1966 AS "HUNGARIAN FREEDOM FIGHTERS DAY" IN BALTIMORE In commemoration of the fight against Communist domination made by the Hungarian children, students and workers who not only fought for their freedom, but in many instances died for it, the Hungarians of Maryland, are commemorating the Tenth Anniversary of this revolt against Communistic rule on Sunday, October 23, 1966. The Hungarians of Maryland would like also to express their heartfelt thanks for the spiritual and physical help given them by the citizens of Baltimore and Maryland during and since their fight for freedom. It is to be noted that the people of Hungary made this fight for freedom, not only for themselves, but for the rest of the world as well. NOW, THEREFORE, I, THEODORE R. MCKELDIN, MAYOR of the City of Baltimore, do hereby proclaim Sunday, October 23, 1966, as "HUNGARIAN FREEDOM FIGHTERS DAY" IN BALTIMORE, and urge all our citizens to pay tribute to these loyal and brave people.
