J. 1 12 FÁKLYALÁNG A Condemnable Misrepresentation Most recently in the high stream of the presidential election campaign certain radio and television networks and other news media repeatedly are making announcements that “the Hungarian Freedom Fighters’ Federation of 1956 unanimously manifested its determination to support and sponsor the Goldwater-Miller ticket as the only choice of all Hungarian Freedom Fighters.” This is a most deplorable delusive falsehood. The organization which does publicise this announcement is positively not a genuine association of Freedom Fighters■ It is rather a conglomerate of people with unknown background and with the aim to promote personal interests of persons involved, who joined to the end to derivate various advantages out of the historical event of the 1956 Hungarian October Revolution. They steadily get their financial support from unknown — non-Hungarian — sources and have strong relations with the most extreme right wing radical elements of various former Hungarian Fascists and Nazi Organizations. Nobody had authorized them to announce such statements simply because nobody has the power to do so. No Freedom Fighters’ Federation has the right to peddle with the moral capital of the 1956 October 23 Revolution. This attitude is damageous to the future of the oppressed Hungarian people and we feel ourselves obliged to correct their misleading announcements in the interest of the unsullied reputation and fame of the real Hungarian Freedom Fighters. WHOM TO LOVE? (Continued from page 5) ready has shown many initiatives and pointed to new directions among the Hungarians living in exile. This, we would like to do now once again. The timing is also auspicious. Czech hegemony which made the American East-European policy sick for a long time seems to be fading out among the nationalities in the United States mainly because of the inflexible Stalinist and subversive attitude of the Czechs. During President Kennedy’s administration it seemed to have been replaced by a general Slav hegemony because of his personal relationships. This trend, however, came to a sudden end as a result of last November’s tragedy in Dallas. Instead of these influences, we would like to instill the hegemony of justice in the policy of the United States towards Central and Eastern Europe. This justice or demonstration of justice seems to have disappeared from it since October 1918. In politics, however, nothing has a “final” character. The leadership of the Hungarian emigration — at least so far — proved to be unable to bring about such a basic change. Such a change was made also impossible by the role played by the Free Europe Committee. Americans of Hungarian descent are for those who are willing to contribute to the bringing about of such a change and who have the intelligence and the clear sight to recognize the meaning of such a change which will have to make the policy of the United States towards Central-Eastern Europe more efficient, more fruitful and more successful in the future. Detailed plans are on some desk in one of the rooms of the White House. Candidates supported by Americans of Hungarian descent will be asked to bring them to the attention of the competent people and help their implementation with the aim of a final victory.
