1 10 FÁKLYALÁNG the store while we give him a protective cover with our guns. I have knelt under the show-window and pointed the nozzle inside the store. As soon as the boy reached the door a short series of bullets cut him down. I continued firing towards the direction the flashes were coming from. The other boys followed each other in trying to enter the store but they were all cut down by sub-machine gun fire. Left all alone I moved backward all trembling under the shocking experience. It took me about 8 or 10 shots to blast off a burning lamp on a lamp-post nearby to protect myself. In the darkness I have reached a doorway and began to cry. The fellow freedom fighters took me back to the Corvinkoz. Later on I was told that altogether two Soviet soldiers, one secret policemen were taken out dead and one Soviet soldier and three secret policemen were taken out seriously injured. The two freedom fighters were still alive when the store was taken. This horrible sight remained with me for a long time even after the revolution. I must admit that the cruelty demonstrated there by the Soviet soldiers and their secret police supporters greatly influenced me during the revolution. They did not show mercy and they did not deserve mercy. Editor: These were only excerpts from the revolutionary experiences of the legendary Pongratz Brothers. They are now working on a book which will contain the exciting story of their participation in the revolution and freedom fight of 1956.
