GUIDE TO THE CATALOGUE The numbered entries of the catalogue consist of two parts: 1. a bibliographic description, with the data of the possibly ideal, complete copy, 2. a description of the copies, describing in detail the library’s own copies together with their unique features. All copies of a single edition are described under the same entry number, following a joint bibliographic description, and marking the individual copies by letters in lower case. 1. Contents of the bibliographic description When choosing the name form of the author (and contributors) we usually followed the practice of the 16th-century books catalogue of the National Széchényi Library (BNH Cat.). Had it not been possible, the name form in the national language was preferred. Greek names are listed in a form transliterated from the original; saints, popes and rulers in their Latin name form. From alternative names references are made. In case of defective copies the data of the missing parts are also provided, without square brackets (as the lack of pages is mentioned by the copy description). If, however, the work of the second or third author is missing, their data do not figure at the adequate places of the alphabetical listing. When the author’s name is not given the entry is filed according to the first word of the title (neglecting the undeclined articles). If the author’s name is not included on the title page but could be identified, a reference was made from the title to the author. Long titles have been abbreviated, marking the omissions by dots. The texts have been copied letter by letter, capital letters and lower-case letters have been written according to current spelling rules, abbreviations and ligatures have been elucidated without marking. Line endings have been reflected in exceptional cases only, if no adequate bibliographic description has been available. If the title had been given on the publication not in the language of the work in question, we referred to the language in brackets, in italics, in Latin, following the title. E.g. after a Latin title: (Graece). Following the data of contributors (editors, translators etc.) we have provided in short the part of the text from the title page indicating works bound to the work by the publishers. The relevant data have been listed among the entries, indicating the quality of their contribution: (ed.), (trad.), (praef.) etc., and referring to the entry number. Imprint data are provided in a separate line, possibly with the specificity of the colophon, but the year is always indicated with Arabic numbers. With books printed before 1520 we have quoted the month and day of printing as well. If XVIII
