AN OUTSIDER’S NOTES ON THE SOCIOLOGICAL DATABASE OF THE METROPOLITAN ERVIN SZABÓ LIBRARY

Altough the aim of this study is to introduce the latest version of the Sociological Database of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library (SzocioWeb) some personal moments must be mentioned first after which its antecedent is described as the latter has defined mostly the present features of this database.

First it deals with the bibliography of Sociological Information issued between 1972 and 1989, among the main aspects the number of publications and the bibliographical system can be found.

This is followed by a comparison in which the four remarkable cycles (1984-1994,1980- 1998, 1977-2000/1, 1970-2000) of the database issued on CD-ROM and the SzocioWeb which covers the years from 1970 to 2004 are compared first from the quantitative aspect of the processed material. To analyze its content fully the author gives a summary of the conclusion of his former studies in Hungarian databases and follows the ways of Péter Jacsó’s book (Szöveges CD-ROM és webes adatbázisok tartalmának elemzése). He deals with the size of the database, its up-to-date information and the processed periodicals in details whilst the others are summed up briefly.

Although the analysis confirmed by 6 tables and 1 figure finds some small deficiencies - which have already been corrected - on the whole the SzocioWeb is considered to be one of the best Hungarian databases in view of the processed material and availability.
