Selected advertisements from Budapest int he 18th and 19,h centuries Advertisements and publicity materials are always authentic documents of a period. From what hadbeen offered for sale or sought for purchase one can get an image of the technical nvelties. housing Conditions and employment opportunities, people’s engagements and clothes, health problems and therapy, and last but not least of theis eating and drinking habits, i.e. their way of life. Advertisements precisely reflect the development stage of economy, the taste culture of an era, refer to the changes int he way of living and habits. They are inseparably attached not only to the history of economy and culture, buta re also part of the history of a town and well illustrate the process of town development. So are they int he case of Pest and Buda. later Budapest. The introduction to this essay throws light ont he advertising habit sin the capital and presents some interesting and rare examples of the spreading printed individual advertisements, brochures arid sheets. From the 1850s dailies and weeklies regularly published advertisements and various advertising newspapers followed each other. The essay publishes a characteristic selection of these. The annex provides a selection from contemporary press publicity materials and small prints to illustrate the advertising habits and spectacular graphic solutions of the second half of the 19th century. 190
