General Beck, who Commanded at Cologne for the Emperour, has received Orders to hasten forthwith into Hungary, for that being Governour of Buda, his presence is thougt more necessary there than elsewhere. — We are also assured, That his Electoral. Highness of Brandenburgh intends to send 6000 Men into Hungary the next Spring, under the Command of General Schöning, who was at the last Siege of Buda, and highly contributed to the winning of the Town, being one of the first that entred with his Men.« B. 1690. 1390. But by committing this fault, they give the Imperialists time to put in a good posture of Defence all the places they possess on this side the Drave ; especially Alba Regalis and Buda ; and there is great probability they will lose notime in fortifyng Esseck ; there will be the Rendezvous of their Army the next Campaign, and than what a trouble will it be to the Turks, to dislodge the Imperialists, when once entrench’d in such an advantageous Post?« B. 1691. 1391. Propositions of Peace do not hinder the Turks from making Extraordinary Preparations for the next Campaign. They have resolved to send three Armies into the Field ; the first and most numerous to act about Eszeck, the fortifications of which the rigour of the season has delay’d, as also those of Buda ; so that only a numerous force must be the preservation of Coth.« B. 1691. 1392. The Turks, who should have begun the Campaign so early, appear not at all in Hungary . . . Some assure us that their forces are so formidable, that they promise themselves nothing less than the Conquest of all Hungary. That they have already nominated the Bassa’s of Esseck and Buda : So certainly do they build upon the re-taking both these places. Nevertheless, the Christians have had leisure enough to fortifie them ; and Buda, which cost the Imperalists two Months Sieg , may well put a stop to the Infidels, for one Month ; unless some Misfortune happen, like to that which occasioned the loss of Belgrade, which does not fall out every day. Others say, the Infidels will first fall upon Esseck, to facilitate the Passage of the Drave and the Moraszt ; but that after that, they march directly to Vienna, the Breaches of which are not yet repair’d, without stopping to sit down before any other places. That they will only leave a volant Camp near Buda, to have an eye upon that and the Neighbouring Garrisons, and to secure their Convoys ; all which, nevertheless, it «s no easie thing, to put in execution.« — p. 204. »T will be work enough to make themselves Masters of Eszeck and Buda ; though I question whether they would be able to do that, should the Imperialists not be in condition to relieve ’em.« B. 1691. 1394.
