masters were employed. During the revolution and war of independence of 1848/49 the inhabitants of Polgárdi proved to be the adherents of national independence. They set on duty 253 national guards and 65 hon­véds (soldiers) for the defence of the civil change. The years fol­lowing the suppression of the war of independence resulted ­because of the emancipation of serfs - in the strengthening of the free peasant holdings. Between 1848 and the end of the 19th cen­tury 380 middle peasant holdings were organized. The parallel existence of large estates and peasant holdings affected positively on the development on the local society. At the turning of the cen­tury, the population of the settlement exceeded 4000, the local administration steadied down and associations were founded by the process of the inhabitants' self-organization. Clubs and farm­ers' unions were formed and settlement development in modern sense was established. Railway revolutionized the situation of transport in the settlement, the organization of a post-office and a telegraph-office extended communicatin facilities. Basic medical services became continuous, a doctor and a pharmacy worked in the village. It was the 1st world war that broke the economic augmenta­tion. The number of war deads reached 140, 30 war-widows mourned on their husbands, 40 war-orphans mourned on their fathers. The autumn of 1918 did not bring the peace and tranquil­ity after the 4-year long war but the overture of the revolutions. The bourgeois-democratic revolution broken out in October 1918 led into a dictatorship in March 1919. The paralyzing effects of the Soviet-like dictatorship of the proletariat could be mainly experienced in agriculture. Co-operative farms were formed from the large estates and the peasant holdings were also menaced by the spectre of collectivisation. The more than two decades between the suppression of the Soviet Republic and the outbreak of the 2nd world war resulted in the consolidation of the peasant holdings despite financial and economic crisises.
