A szelídség és alázatosság ikertestvérek. Ezért is állít­ja elénk a Megváltó követendő példa­ként. Jézus nem erőlteti, hogy minden áron olyanok legyünk, mint amilyen­nek látni szeretné tanítványait, bár ki­hangsúlyozza: „Legyetek azért tökéle­tesek, mint a ti mennyei Atyátok töké­letes” (Máté 5:48). Alázatosságából fakad, hogy nem magát állítja a töké­letesség mintaképének! Úgy fogad el, amint vagyunk. Tud csöndben várni, figyelve a fejlődésünket, törekvőkész­ségünket, míglen eljön az idő, hogy „felsőbb osztályba” léptessen. Bár min­dig újabb és újabb feladatokat bíz re­ánk, mégsem kíván tőlünk erőnket és képességünket meghaladó erőfeszítést, nehogy a feladatok nagysága miatt fé­lelem és csüggedés vegyen erőt rajtunk. Az ő iskolájában az a csodálatos, hogy mindenkit kíméletesen és gyön­géden, felettébb megértőén kezel, mert jól ismeri természeti adottságainkat, lelki szegénységünket és viszonylagos szellemi befogadó-képességünket (Fii 3:12—14). Ezzel szemben az öntelt és magabiztos tanítványokkal Jézus nem tud mit kezdeni. De égi tanítómeste­rünk nemcsak szelíd és alázatos szívű volt, hanem engedelmes is, „haláláig, mégpedig a kereszthalálig” (Fii 2:8). Engedelmessége az Atyával fennálló szoros összetartozásból eredt (Jn 10:30). Azután előrelátása is csodá­latra méltó, mert nemcsak kiválasztott tanítványaira gondolta, de azokra is, akiket majd azok fognak tanítani; „akik az ő beszédükre hisznek majd benne” (Ján 17:20—21). Ez a jövőről való isteni gondoskodás fölemelő meg­nyilvánulása. Kozma László The Last will be First I cannot erase from my mind that the “last” followers of the Lord who witnessed the agony and death of Jesus were women. According to the report of John they were: Mary His mother, her sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene (19: 25). Most of the disciples fled in fear. As far as we know only John was present. My heart is throbbing in jubilee: thank God for the fearless, faithful women who cared and dared to be close at the foot of the cross. How comforting it was to our Lord — after most of His disciples and followers forsook Him — to see among the rail­ing hostile mob a small group, four women and His beloved disciple stand­ing by. As the agony of Christ was real, the presence of those loving people meant genuine comfort for the suffering Lord. Their names were especially noted by the Apostle John and I have an assurance in my heart that those names were not forgotten in heaven. Those saintly women who were the “last” with Jesus, received a blessed experience that the men who fled could not have. They saw the suffer­ing; they heard the communication with the criminals who were crucified with Him; heard that Jesus on the cross dying still had the power and authority to save the repenting crim­inal: “Thou will be with me in Para­dise.” Still they heard more — the as­suring words of Christ as He was pas­sing into the valley of death: “Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit.” (Luke 23:46) They also heard the Cen­turion’s testimony: “Truly this was the son of God.” (Matt. 27:54) The events that these women saw, the words and declarations that they heard created in them a lasting impres­sion and unforgetable experience. They saw Christ’s majesty in His life and death. Their courage and love which compelled and enabled them to be at the cross — as the “last” of His followers — was richly rewarded with a glorious learning that they never forgot. 1 do not know whether in heaven there will be any order of first and last. Although Jesus referred to John the Baptist, by which He indicated that there will be ranks in eternity. This is what Christ said in Matthew 11:11: “Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist, notwithstand­ing he that is last in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” If there will be “first” in heaven, my heart dictates to me to say that these women who were with Jesus to the end, will surely be the first in Christ’s kingdom. I cannot imagine that the escaping disciples were allotted higher rank than the brave women, who were the “last” with our Saviour. The last will be first!
