They struggled and fought, but at the point where the track was separated, we find women. The heroic actions of the women decided whether the movement of religious history would go left or right. It is our duty to extol these women who played a key role in determining the path of religious and national history. We have picked out some of the most important Biblical women whose deeds set the direction of events. We shall not mention Eve, the mother of mankind and Mary, the mother of Jesus. Their influence on the history of mankind is evident. 1. The name of Rebekah reminds us of a beautiful love story, how she became the wife of Isaac, and the report of an artful design by which she assured the right of the first born ot her twin son, Jacob. This sequence caused Jacob to flee to Laban, marry Leah and Rachel, have twelve sons, and through Joseph settled in Egypt. This move saved the people of Israel. They would have been lost, or absorbed by the natives in Canaan. In Egypt Pharaoh received them, later suffered them, still later oppressed them, but they did not mingle with Egyptians. When they became in 400 years several hundred thousand strong, they were able to return to Canaan as conquerors and established themselves as a strong, prosperous nation. The sojourn in Egypt, although they called it slavery, was really nothing else but an incubator prepared by the Lord and prepared with a purpose. The son of Rebekah, Jacob, received the name of Israel and ever since this name is holding the Jews together. What would have happened without Rebekah? No one can tell. 2. The mother of Moses, Jochebed (Ex. 6:20). What was her role? She with her mother-love, hid her son the Switch Moses for three months and after that with clever mother thinking combined with wit and determination she devised a plan to save her son. She knew where the king’s daughter took a bath and she had a plan to send his sister Miriam to watch the basket so that the princess’ servants should pull it from the water. Then she planned that Miriam should recommend the boy’s mother as a nurse. By her cleverness, Jochebed saved her son who was reared in the king’s palace. What happened later was that Moses dared to stand before Pharaoh and demand that his people be allowed to „go”. In the desert when the people revolted by wanting to go back to Egypt, Moses prevented their return and led them to the brink of the Promised Land. Where would the Jews be today without Moses? But before that where would Moses be without his wise mother? Jochebed was right there at the switch of history and turned it in the right direction. 3. Let us turn to the New Testament. We find a woman in whose house the first Christians met. Her name was Mary. What did she do? Since we know that Barnabas, the friend and mentor of Paul, was her brother, we can assume, although there is no proof, that Barnabas, became a Christian through the witnessing of Mary. Mary also had a son, John Mark. He grew up in her Christian home influenced by the Apostles. We know that Barnabas was the one who introduced Paul in the church in Jerusalem. The Christians in that church were afraid of Paul and that suspicion was understandable. But Barnabas convinced them. Now what would have happened if there were no Barnabas and no church in Mary’s home where Paul was accepted? Christianity would go on but perhaps it would have taken a different line. But Mary had a son, Mark. He wrote the first Gospel and that Gospel became the source for Matthew and Luke. Where would Paul be and where would Mark be if there were no Mary? Her hospitable home was the cradle of Christianity. Mary stood at the switch and moved it to the right way. 4. We should not forget Lydia of Philippi. As far as the written records are concerned she was the first European Christian. It is a possibility that Christians were already in Rome, but we do not have any record as to how it got there. With the name of Lydia is connected the first European church. And because the church met in her house and because the Scripture does not give the name of any man it is highly possible Lydia was the leader of that little Christian group. Lydia was in the right spot. And by her act she directed the progress of work in Europe. Is it not enough to get all of us inspired to be in the right place at the right time?
