This is remarkable it is remembered that three years ago the number was nearer 200. One of the reasons for such “difficulties” has been the refusal of such Christians to registered their churches. Many feared State interference, and preferred to meet “in secret.” The secrecy, however, has frequently been an illusion, and the State knows about such activity although frequently it takes no action against the majority of the people, sometimes “cracking down” on the leadership. The reference was to an unregistered group whose existence is well-known, and a matter for such open discussion. So much for the claim that such groups are invariably “underground.” The most famous of these dissidents by far is Georgi Vins, himself not a minister, but the Secretary and leader of the dissident Baptist Council of Churches which was a breakway in the early 1960’s from the very large Baptist Community in the USSR, which, in its turn encourages all its churches to be registered. Georgi Vins is still in prison, working as an electrical engineer, for his alleged violations of Soviet law. Many Christians in the West, including those who think he is being victimised on account of his faith, and equally those who think he has created many of his own problems, pray for him and those like him. Interestingly, the Church he formed “in the forest” near Kiev, in the Ukraine, has, during his time of imprisonment, chosen to become registered itself, and for three years has been worshipping in its new and substantial building, with the State’s permission. I preached in this Church last month, received a tremendous welcome, and met his wife, to whom I mert nem tudjuk mely órában kell innen elmenni.
