MIXED MARRIAGES RATIO SHIFTS Washington—The pattern of interracial marriages in the United States changed significantly in the 1960s with the great proportion being marriages of black men and white women, according to the Census bureau. There were more than twice as many marriages of that combination than the reverse—the marriages of white men and black women—during the decade of the 1960s. Although the trend had been noted before, it accelarated greatly in the period. The 1960 census showed an almost equal number of both types of interracial marriages. There were 25,496 black man-white woman marriages and 25,913 white manblack woman marriages intact in 1960. But the 1970 census showed a marked increase—to 41,223—in black man-white woman marriages. It also showed a decrease—to 23,566—in the number of white man-black woman marriages. WORLD’S BIGGEST CHURCH MISTAKE In Kerimaki, Finland is the largest wooden church in the world, a title achieved by mistake. A fire in 1840 destroyed the old church in this small village in southeastern Finland. The villagers wrote to Helsinki for a new building. These duly arrived and local artisans got to work. They wondered a bit about the measurements but continued building. When they were finished they had a church for 3,400 people, but there were—and are—only 800 souls in Kerimaki. The villagers checked the drawings again and discovered that the architect had made all the measurements in feet, while they had been building in meters. Inside and out, the church is built entirely of wood except for the chandeliers, windows and the lower part of the belfry, which is stone. (AB) A New York church with a woman pastor has joined the Southern Baptist Convention, and she is believed to be the first woman to serve an SBC church as pastor. Mrs. Dreucillor Fordham has been the pastor of the Christ Temple Baptist church of New York City since its founding in 1953. The church, originally affiliated with the Progressive National Baptist Convention, became dually aligned with the SBC in 1972.
