The Medieval Hungarian Sequentionale

The only rhymed genre of the medieval mass was the sequence or prose sung before the gospel. Nearly every Sunday and high day it sounded except for the period of Lent, and the corpus universally spread was complemented by regional works until the end of the Middle Ages. The sequences extant in the Hungarian sources, their style, origin, references, as well as the works reflecting local activity became known by the collection of Benjamin Rajeczky. By means of 57 manuscripts and printed sources, in this study I search the answer to the question whether it is possible to demonstrate typical characteristics of the Hungarian dioceses through the combination of the repertoire and the liturgical assignment of the pieces. Finally, after a survey of the sequences of the Blessed Virgin Mary I give forth some unpublished pieces of De beata virgine.
