Observations on the Heliogravures by Sándor Beszédes of the Little Passion and the Great Passion Series by Albrecht Dürer

In 1875 Sándor Beszédes, a photographer in Esztergom, published photographic engravings (heliogravures) of the Little Passion and Great Passion series of Albrecht Dürer. In 1880 he created an exclusive decorative album with 55 photographs of the most valuable works of art at the Esztergom Basilica’s treasury with the support of Primate János Simor. Beszédes reissued these photographs at his own expense in 1881 to make them available for a wider public. The present study cites archival sources confirming that Beszédes applied for and was granted financial support by the Ministry of Religion and Public Education to publish the photographic copies of Dürer’s artwork and the treasures of the Basilica.
