Two Portraits of Susanne Bois de Chesne, Wife of Miklós Barabás This paper discusses the significance of the portrait miniature in the oeuvre of Miklós Barabás by examining key works and citing the artist’s writings from newly discovered manuscripts. It places particular emphasis on the portrait miniature Barabás made of his wife in 1842, which today hangs beside a photograph taken of a life-size oil portrait of her painted by him twenty years later. The similarity of the photograph and the miniature in size renders the compositional similarities between the two paintings more salient. Considering the often evoked connection between miniature paintings and photography, one could contend that Barabás, when taking a picture of his own large-scale oil painting, created a kind of modern portrait miniature. The complex function of the photograph is further enhanced by the fact that both the photograph and the oil painting itself were made after his wife’s death. 265
