h century. As a lecturer of the Teacher's Training College in Esztergom (1842 - 1849); his life had been determined by two main activities: the priesthood and the education. He acted as a country-wide known pedagogical speciálist, he published several manuals: People's Education (Buda, 1844), General Hygienics (Buda, 1847), Spelling book (Vienna, 1853). He showed great concern about the generál education, teacher's training and primary schools. As the director of several schools of Pest, and later as the main school-inspector of the Esztergom diocese, he had a great practical experience. He founded the first infant's nursery in Pest, which had a reputation in Vienna and Paris as well. Among homely people, the bishop and archiepiscopal vicar was known as „Uncle István": he published a successful series for them which had this title. Professor István Majer was an excellent priest and teacher, an outstanding personality. His activity has always been in people's education service. 28 Esztergomi Közlöny. 1885. október 4. 148
