ERŐS VÁR 7 for a Church building. The property at Hazelwood and Sylvan Ave. corner was purchased for $12,000. On this property was the Church built for an additional $26,000. After the completion of the building there remained a $38,000 mortgage that was secured by the members on their homes. During the interim of 10 years this mortgage indebtedness was lowered to $27,500. This was made possible by the devotion of people and pastors, Stephen Rúzsa, Alexander Poloskey and Andor M. Leffler. When pastor W. Rettmann arrived from Hungary in 1935, the congregation was in a precarious situation, due to the national depression. Through Pastor Rettmann’s efforts, the $27,500 mortgage was refinanced by the Board of American Missions, Church Extenton Fund. When pastor Rettmann resigned in 1945 the indebetedness stood at $5000. The interest free mortgage granted to the congregation by the Board of American Missions of the U. L. C. A. required the annual principal payments of $800. At the special congregational meeting called shortly after the present pastor, Paul Markovits, came to serve the congregation, a special Mortgage Fund was approved in 1946 December. During 1947 this Fund grew to $928.21 by the free will offerings of many individuals. At the annual congregation meeting in 1948 a recommendation made by the pastor was adopted that: “In order to show our faith in the Providence of God, and to appreciate the grateful help of the Church Extention Fund of the Board of American Missions of the U. L. C. A., in saving for our congregation over the period of ten years a considerable sum of interest money, and that our Board may grant some aid to new Mission Congregations desiring to build their churches, be it therefore resolved that First Hungarian Lutheran Church shall repay ALL outstanding mortgage to the Board in this year of 1948.” You are witnessing the fullfilment of this resolution on this 6th day of June 1948.
