402 Barraclough, citty itselfe is pritty and stands most switly upon ye laike. In itt are many strangers and particularly Inglish, who all come thither to be instructed and to lerne to bee enimys to ye Roman religion. My lord Clares tow sonnes *) are now there and have beene above a twel- munth. Leaving Geneva I went to Shambery and passing Mont Seny, which was then in a good umor, came to Torino, a famus citty, and passing by Alessandria came to Genua, and from Genua in a feluca came to Livorno, where yet I am. Concerning these cittys reede Mr. Lasselles. I feare this my longe lines will be trub[lesome] * 2) to you, being I cannot give you an account of the things [wee d]id 2) see in all these cittys, which weare soe many that they would fill a quire of paper to relate them all, soe that I content myselfe with relating only the names of the chife places I have beene in this summer, with yc number of ye miles which y° may have contaned, which I doe believe may amount to betwixt two or three thousant miles, nor could this bee done without expence, though I am confident I have done itt with as litle as any one what ever could have. At my arrivell at Ligorne I found your letter with my bill, for which I give you many thankes; yet this was y° only one that I have receved almost this twelmunth, although in Germany I hurd of one, which was sent after mee, but mist of itt, soe that I know nothing of yc manner of my nephu Cuthberts death nor any nwes att all of our cuntry. Being arrived att Ligorne, I presently understande that Mr William Hussey was comd from Aleppo and had beene heare att Ligorne; but not beeing able to product under sevintene days, or eighty 3) went to Marselles and soe for Italy, in soe much that to my great sorry I have missed of him; yet finding a small shipe of a 100 tuns bound for Scanda- roune 4) with a nwe kings passe, immediatly imbarckes upon her, iudging her by reason of her passe secure. To sea wee goe and after 6 or 7 dayes being by contrary winds mutch tost and tumbled, ye wind still full in our teeth, was agane forced into y° roade of Ligorne; soe that coming a shore and understanding by all, that ye Algerins had taken above 40 of our shipes, all richly leoden, some carrying in mony 40 others 50 or 60 thousant dollars, and that they regarded nothing at all ye nwe passes, and being by all my countrymen advised not to goe with y* shipe, shee being soe very small, resolved to last to quit her, which accordingly I have done, and am now resolved to expect ether a good convenience or not to goe att all, for should I bee light on by them, all I have would not pay my ransome. They come within sight of Ligorne and have chased severall shipes into y° very port. They have 38 good men of war, 3 galles and 8 other smaler vessalls. They devide themselves and goe not above 5 or 6 in company, soe that itt is impossible for any shipe to escape them in these narrow seas, without great fortune. We daly expect Sr John Norborough 5) backe from England with a good squadron of frigats to corbe y° insolensy of these roogues and convoy our marchants from place to place, soe that without a good convenience I will not inbarke, but rather expect 2 or 3 mounthes. All this is longe of ourselves, yet infinit is ye lose that ye marchants have and are licke to suffer from these Argeriens. As soune as I shall determin anythinge I will not fail to aequant you with itt. In ye mean time give my most humble seervis to my good sister with many thankes for all her kindneses to mee, to poore neece Mary and Biddy and Tomy, with my blessing to him. You would doe well to send my neece Mary sumwhither for briding 6) and then marry her.
