400 Barraclough, I have now given you a short relation of the chife townes wee passed, but what wee saw can not bee here expresed. I will now in this loose paper give you an account of my disappointment and what I would have you to doe for mee, which I hope you will not falle to doe. (Auf eingelegtem Zettel.) My desire was, as I writ you from Venice, to goe to Vienna and from thence doune the Danube to Bellgrade and so by land to Constantinoble, which was much approved and licked by all and certanly would have beene a most delicate pleasant iourny and short, for in 18 dayes I could have done it. But beeing now arrived here and having used all immagi- nable means to procure a pas from the Emperors Generali Montecuculy 1), can not any wae prevale, soe that I have noe wae but to goe bake to Livorno and there imbarke, which I am, God willing, resolved to doe. But my companions resolving to go to Präge in Bohemia and sum other of the best tounes in Germany, it beeing too hot for these tow munths to retorne into Italy, I am determined to goe along with them, which will cost me a great deale of mony, and before I can have monis retorned out of Lancashire to London and thence to Livorne, will bee, I feare, a long time, and perchance longer than I can expect. Though I shall not want any, yet I shall not have left sufficient without a new supply for my easterne voyage, and should I write to Mr Harkote to send me a bill of 50 1. to Livorne without his having my monis in his hand before, I should happen bee denyed. Therefore all I desire of you is that immediatly upon the recete of this, you would write to Mr Horkote to send mee a bill for 50 1. to Livorno and give him your word for it, otherwase hee will happen defer the sending of it soe soune; and as for your security I have in this note 2) to Thomas Shepherd ordered you the speedy payment of it. This my request I hope you will not deny, it beeing a thing of great importance to mee and noe preiudice to you. Therefore relying wholy upon you in this bysnes with my love and searvis to your seife, my sister, poore Mary, Byddy, Thorny and all the rest of my brothers, sisters and relations that are alive, I remane your loving brother still WILLIAM CLIFTON. Fall not, I pray, to write to mee att Livorno, for I longe to knowe from you, and desire Mr Horkote to derect his letters to me to the Consuli at Ligorne. 3. Dearest Brother, Ligorne, October 28th, 76. My last to you was from Viena in Germany, in which I gave you a short account of my travals from Venice to that place, as in this I will from thence to Ligorne, where now I am, God be praised, in good health. From Viena then we passed in coatch to Präge, ye chife towne in ye kingdome of Bohemia, passing by severall good large villages and many townes much ruinated by ye wars both of ye Prince Palatine, father to this present Prince, and Prince Rupert, who, usurping ye kingdome of Bohemia, was overcome by the Emperor Ferdinand and Maxemilian, Ducke of Bavary, and deprived not only of Bohemia but ye Palatinate itselfe together with his Electorshipe, which weare both given to Maxemilian Ducke of Bavary. Präge is a very large and fine towne devided into 3 parts, hath running through itt a fine river; its cheape living there, and one of ye largest cittys by much in all Germany; in itt are, as wee weare tould, 30,000 Iwes.
