Receiving the other day a letter from the English Rector at Rome and understanding by it the death of my nephuCuthbert, to whose soulel will ever pray God to be most mercifull, was soe astonisht, that to the admiration of 3 or 4 English gentilmen that then weare present, I was not my seife for sum ouers. I will not say how much I loved him, only this I must and will declare, that there is not that man now living that wished him better then myselfe. But Gods will be done; I wish wee may bee allwase prepared, for whose torne it may be next is uncertane. Little did I thinke at my leaving England to have hard of the death of soe many of my relations in soe short a time. Probably I may bee the next, for besidse that I am of the famely, the dangers that I am now going into both by sea and land, are by most estimed very hazardus; wherefore I humbly beege yours, my sisters with your famelys good prayers. And I will not bee unmindfull of you all at the Holy Sepulchar, if it please God to bringe mee thither safe. Not small is my grife that I must leave Venice and Europe without receiving the least syllable from you. I have sum litle hopes that the newes is not true of my nephu Cuthbert, which I rely wish, beeing I here nothing from you, nor from whom Sr Rector had it. I am to set out from hence in the company of 5 English gentilmen upon Friday next, which will be the 5 of this and the day after Corpus Christi, for Vienna in Germany. Deare Brother, I wish wee may with patience suffer the actions and doing of God Almighty, which well confident are all for oure good and to put us in mind of oure mortalety, to which wee are all subiect, and pray truly for each other, that if not in this at least in the next world wee may ioyfully meete together, whither God guide you and us all.
