The chronicle of Eger Tobacco Factory
The factory-under construction
Factories: Tobacco processed in 1895 The small output, the small number of employees and temporary conditions were by no means a guarantee for success. However, the increase in the demand for cigars was an asset, and eventually the lengthy bargaining between the city and financial politicians came to an end. Egri Újság on 22 February 1895 reported that the Lord Lieutenant of the county “...made an appointment with Béla Graenzenstein Finance Secretary of State, and arranged with him that the only duty on the city’s behalf would be to provide land for the construction of the factory.” On 30 January 1895 the city council adopted the motion, by 114 votes to 2, to grant the site for the tobacco factory at the upper section of the present market-place. The market-place had been a gift to the city by the Bishop Károly Eszterházy in 1790. At that time, and even at the time the factory was founded, this area lay at the edge of the city, and was bordered to the west by the vineyards of Hajdúhegy. The 5 June 1895 number of Egri Újság gave a detailed account of preliminary construction work: A dohánygyár. Az egri dohánygyár építkezési ügve immár a közeli megvalósulás stádiumába jutott.
