The case of Gyula 5zekfü,3 recognition as honorary lecturer /privat-docent/, 1914-1916 /Summary/ The paper reveals the course of proceedings as well as the background of the conferment of an academic degree. The formal characteristics of the recognition were in close connection with important content elements. The recognition of Gyula Szekfü /1883-1955/» one of the historians of the past exerting the greatest influence, differed from the usual proceedings in so far that it was linked with a political scandal which included a newspaper campaign and even an interpellation in Parliament. The candidate was attacked by the opposition that had lost power, for his disillusion-causing book, the more so, since The Banished Rákóczi /1913/ strengthened the political and ideological aspirations of the governing party in an objective way. The explanation of this unjust and shameful attack can be found in the distorting effect of the more and more reduced- political scope - as compared the previous one - a scope charged with repressed tension and limited to cultural life, which itself was distorted. The attacked work, however, cannot be considered as representing the true scientific viewpoint, because the work itself participates in and reproduces viewpoints that oversimplify and tend do dominate.
