LEHEL VADON Upton Sinclair, the outstanding socialist novelist of America, the best known and the most influential representative of the belletristic group of the reformist Muckraking Movement, undertook to tear the veil hiding the shady sides of contemporary America, the corruption of American business, economic, political, social, industrial and cultural life. Both in his numerous reportorial novels and several series of magazine articles he showed quite convincingly that America was far from being an ideal democratic order and demonstrated by means of a great number of factual data that American industrial society was sick. In his capacity as writer and non-professional politician Upton Sinclair laboured for the definite purpose of social betterment with the discovery and analysis of facts and social diseases. He wrote ably and with spirit, attracted wide public attention, educated the American people about widespread corruption and laid the groundwork for many reforms. He seemed to be explaining the moral disintegration of a whole society. He may be said to have been the first prole­tarian writer in America. 251
