WORD MEANING, SENTENCE STRUCTURE, GRAMMATICALLY BY DR. ISTVÁN SZABÓ Taking issue with the proponents of autonomous grammar, i. e., with those „orthodox" generativists who, like J. J. Katz, R. Jackendoff and others, maintain that it is possible to describe the grammar of language without recourse to meaning, I have adduced and analysed in this paper a „batch" of linguistic data which constitute an intricate fabric of semantic facts and grammatical rules that bear out the correctness of semantico-syntactic approach to language. The number of linguistic evidence and theoretical arguments in favour of this approach is enormous (those given here are but a fragment of them), and studying any of the works referred to in the Bibliography is bound to result in a „chain reaction "-like multiplication of bibliography and linguistic data. Most of the linguistic material discussed here is in English, but a few examples are taken from other languages; there seems to be no need, then, to give a detailed summary: the interested Reader will be able to infer most of the theoretical problems at issue from the linguistic facts presented above (the other limiting factor is the space available). 244
