Summary An Irish and a Hungarian Model oí Mythic Drama: W. B. Yeats and Áron Tamási Accepting the view that human culture is fundamentally homogeneous, we can easily understand how similar cultural phenomena may appear in different places independent of each other. Such a parallel development is shown by the drama of W. B. Yeats and Áron Tamási. While they both shared certain of the basic aims of modern European symbolist and avantgardist tendencies, they also had some special features in common. The history of the Irish and the Hungarians in Transylvania, whose representative Tamási was, abounds in similarities. With both Yeats and Tamási artistic aims were combined with national commitment. Both playwrights could still rely on the living folk imagination at the beginning of the century, and they absorbed from it its very essence: the mythic vision itself which holds man and the universe, the natural and the supernatural, reality and fantasy in organic unity. A glance at a few plays by each author convinces the reader of the kin­ship. The subject-matter is the same at the core: basic human problems and feelings like birth and death, love and hatred, spiritual aspirations for per­fection and desire for revival. They are treated by Yeats with a more philo­sophical and by Tamási with an emphatically moral approach, but by both in allegoric or symbolic, poetic, ritualistic and mythic drama. The paper gives a few examples where the similarity of views, themes, figures, dramaturgic and stylistic elements is obvious. 26 403
