FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING STRATEGIES BY DR. LÁSZLÓ BUDAI Various strategies have been advocated in the history of foreign language teaching, but none of them have proved to be definitive. The methods which have been used in Hungarian schools are much fewer in number. Although some definite names were attached to foreign language teaching methods in the past, any of them could rightly have been called eclectic. The methods in question can mainly be characterized by the role assigned to grammar as well as the mother tongue of the learner. The present article shows the models of four ,pure' and two ,hybrid' meth­ods approaches schematized by the author: 1. Grammar-Translation Method, 2. Structural Approach, 3. Situational Approach, 4. Functional Approach, 5. Situational-Functional Approach, 6. Situational-Structural-Functional Approach. The merits of the so-called Situational-Structural-Functional Approach have fully been exploited in English language textbooks current in Hungarian secon­dary schools as well as in teacher-training, the approach being compiled in its present form by the author of this article, who is a textbook-writer and a teacher-trainer himself. The differences between examples, pattern sentences /phrases, and sentence/phrase models, important constituents of this approach, have been pointed out and the processes of constructing models have been analysed. The author states that newer and newer hybrid methods can come into being on the basis of the statements, hypotheses, half- and part-truths enume­rated in the second half of the article under headings naming the most important allied principles of foreign language teaching methodology. Finally the author presents a scheme comprising the essential objective and subjective factors determining foreign language teaching strategies. The theoretical issues of the article have been illustrated by extracts from English language textbooks published in Hungary during the past three decades. .351
