Weber, Hartmut - Maier, Gerald: Digitale Archive und Bibliotheken, Stuttgart 2000. Summary A SURVEY OF HYBRID REPROGRAPHY SYSTEM, SITUATION AND POSSIBILITIES Dynamic development of technical means for recording of images as well as of media on which they are stored met its culmination at the end of the twentieth century. In that respect the biggest step forward represents the digital image with all its advantages and disadvantages. A selection of the adequate security reproduction technique for archival material is a strategic decision, which can be made on is possible to make only after the examination of all advantages and disadvantages of different reproductions technique. The possibility of an immediate transmission at distance, of fast retrieval, copying of new generations of records without loosing on quality and highquality printout on different media indicates its great advantages. In spite of the those good points, caution is needed when choosing equipment and software, because rapid technical development and changes and a lack of appropriate standards demands upgrading or changing of the entire information system every three or five years. At this moment, it means use of hybrid systems that integrate all advantages of analog and digital technology. Physical qualities (format, form, level of damage etc.) and a mean of use and processing of archival material are of fundamental significance for the choice of the appropriate reproduction technique. Considering that the Croatian State Archives is performing microfilming systematically for very many years and that large amount of archival material has been microfilmed, it is justified to apply conversion of analog to digital records. In this way will be exploit all advantages of digital image and without refilming of the archival material. The specificity of archival microimages (varity of physical characteristics, damages that effect the color etc.) also stipulate the choice of devices and software for digization of microforms. By an expert combination of various reproduction techniques optimal preservation of archival material and safeguarding of security copy to the longest possible time.
