Summary THE OLDEST INVENTORY OF THE RECORDS OF THE ZAGREB CHAPTER In the archives ol the Zagreb chapter, deposited in the Archives of Croatia, there exists an inventory of the records of the Zagreb chapter, written in the late 15 th century [Acta Capituli antiqua (Act. Cap. ant., ACA) fasc. 87, Nro 5]. This inventory, although formally known to the public, was underestimated, so that the author undertakes to illustrate its importance and value. It comprises the privileges obtained by the Chapter and rolls concerning its estates. The oldest record, registered in the inventory and still existing in the Chapter archives, dates from 1193 (K 7 in the inventory, today ACA 5/2); the most recent one, registered by the »first hand« in this codex, bears the date 31 st October, 1490 (B 22 in the inventory, today ACA 2/38). Only a small number of records have been registered by the »second hand«, and a quite insignificant one by the »third hand«; they date mainly from the period after 1490, i. e. from the reign of Vladislav (1490—1516) and Ludovicus II (1516— —1526). The inventory itself is a codex of 26 folios, measuring 21,25 x 32 cm and composed of two kinds of paper. The text is approximately 20 cm broad and 27 cm high; there are 24 — 31 lines on a page, written by the »first hand«. On fol. 1 v — 2 v. we find a general or a sumary inventory of the records; single records are listed on the fol. 3 — 22, headed by letters A — M and ordinal numbers. The additions by the »second« and the »third hand« can be found on the fol. 22 v and 23 v; the remaining pages contain no entries. The preponderant part of the summary inventory is written by the »second hand«; the minor part belongs to the »first hand«. Two kinds of paper have been used in composing the codex: a thicker one and a finer one. The former has a watermark representing a flower with three petals (crocus) and appears in a quantity of 8,5 sheets, a single sheet measuring 0,320 x 0,425 m. According to Briquet, this corresponds to the »minor Bologna sheet«. The watermark of the finer paper is a balance in a circle, being characteristic for paper of Italian (especially Venetian) origin and produced before 1600. Both kinds of paper lack the countermark, which otherwise appears at the end of IS* 11 century. The script of the inventory is cursive Gothic, imbued with elements of scriptura humanistica, just such as was widely used in the offices in the second half of the 15 th century. The additions by the »second« and the »third hand« are less legible. The text is full of abbreviations; this fact matches its being written in Gothic script. There appear no diphthongs. Instead of -tiwe always find -ci- (e. g. pertinencie, corresponding to the standard form per tinentiae). I longa is fairly frequent, after consonants (r e g n j instead of the standard form regni) and after i (— i j and sometimes — y). The inventory ACA 87/5 enables us to reconstruct the order of the Chapter archives in the second half of the 15 th century. The records were kept in the vestry of the Zagreb Cathedral, In a record cabinet with 14 drawers, ordered in groups corresponding to single estates or privileges of the Chapter. Twelve drawers were divided in two compartments each and marked with letters A — M of the Latin alphabet. The records, grouped in them, had their ordinal numbers. The letters figure only in the list; the records are not lettered. The remaining two drawers, N and O, lack a proper list with ordinal numbers; their contents is registered by the »second« or the »third hand«. 252
