Upotrijebljena literatura: Farmakovskij, M. Summary MOISTURE IN ARCHIVAL STORES This article describes the harmful influence of moisture on archival materials, different degrees of damage caused by moisture, apparates for measuring and control of moisture and also the measures that must be undertaken to reduce the amount of moisture in stores. If it exceeds the optimal limit, moisture causes much damage on archival material. Among other things it causes swelling and after that deterioration and decay of paper and parchment; the ink, in which documents are written, gradually dissolves under the influence of moisture; glue in the paper dissolves under the influence of moisture and that, first of all, weakens paper and can leade to sticking together of leaves. Moisture spoils the aesthetic looks of documents because it causes the appearance of big yellow stains. Besides this moisture helps and quickens the - development of bacteria, moulds and insects which then cause damage to the archival material. In order to prevent the harmful influence of moisture we must know degree of moisture in stores. Various apparates are used for measuring and control of moisture but the most suitable for archives are hygrometers and Psychrometers because they are precise, their use is simple and price reasonable. In order to maintain the optimal amount of moisture in a store the building should be dry, appropriatelly equipped and besides, the rooms must be regulariy aired and, if necessary, heated and ventilated. The fluctaution of moisture in two stores of the State Archives of Croatia in Zagreb, depending on outside conditions and airing, is graphically shown at the end of the article. — 288 —
