290 A MEDGYESI SOMOGYI CSALÁD KÖZÉPKORI OKLEVELEI Lőrinc Biriszló OSB: The mediaeval charters of the Somogyi family of Medgyes The archive of the Somogyi family of Medgyes is one of the valuable collections of the Archives of the Archabbey in Pannonhalma. The written documents of five boxes were handed over to the Archabbey by Wallis Gyuláné, née Countess Ilona Somogyi, the last member of the count-titled branch of the Somogyi family of Medgyes. She most likely decided this way because Archabbot Dániel Somogyi (1768–1801) was a member of the family, too. The written documents of the collection of the mediaeval charters starts in 1336, however, the first original charter is of 1357. The collection includes 36 texts of charters, out of which 13 items are original ones on parchment, 3 items are copies of modern times, 3 items are abridged Hungarian translations of modern times, and 17 items are preserved in the form of transcriptions only. The publication of three charters from the collection has been completed earlier, and many of the rest have got abridges editions. The present paper contains the unpublished texts, however, it also includes the earlier published items in abridges form and notes and comments. The Somogyi family had many branches. Nothing can definitely be known about the mediaeval ancestry of the Medgyes branch, the family-tree can only be constructed starting from early modern times. As for the mediaeval history of the family members, the hereby published charters do not provide new data. However, the texts of the charters are important concerning the properties and their possessors mentioned in them, therefore they can mean a starting point for the further investigation of the properties mentioned in them. A new direction of research can be investigating who the possessors of the properties had been before they were appropriated by the Somogyi family of Medgyes, and then by the Order of Saint Benedict in Pannonhalma. A greater part of the properties in question can easily been localized. All the mentioned settlements and areas can be found in Transdanubia, in Counties of Fejér, Körös, Pest, Pilis, Somogy, Vas and Veszprém. While preparing the notes and comments of the charters beyond paying attention to the texts themselves I have also taken into consideration the material base. In the case of the original charters – since they are available in the archives – I have identified the exact dimensions of the vellum. If the mediaeval seal has also been preserved in good condition and its type can be defined, it has also been included in the notes and comments.
