One can ask how the old stories of the healings of Jesus can relate to our daily lives. First of all, Jesus can heal even today. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever." Hebrews 13:8 In this Bible story, Matthew represents a person who believes that money is the only important thing in life. To gain money tax collectors ignored that it was a stigma to be collaborators with the occupying Roman forces. But Matthew was redeemed by the words spoken by Jesus, "Follow me." (Matthew 9:9b) And he did, along with thousands and millions since who have personally heard these words of invitation from Jesus. A Jewish leader of the synagogue came and knelt before Him and said, "My daughter has just died, but come and put your hand on her, and she will live." (Matthew 9:18) Jesus was willing to go immediately. We, the people of the 21st century, are willing to come before Jesus if the health and well being of our children requires it. But this Jewish leader truly believed that Jesus had the healing power to restore the life of his daughter. We, too experience illnesses, such as cancer, and other types of health problems. In the beginning, many people put their trust in the best physicians and the type of treatments that are recommended. And when they experience that the therapy is unsuccessful and the patient's condition becomes worse, they suddenly discover that maybe they should pray. True and genuine prayer is not ignored by God and many times we experience the answers to our prayers. A woman who was ill for 12 years came up behind Him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, / will be healed." (Matthew 9:20,21) She experienced exactly what she believed. Extraordinary healing power came into her life and her health was restored. She heard the words of Jesus, "Take heart, daughter, your faith has healed you." Matthew 9:22 May we be able to experience such healing when our faith will be put in action. Jesus continued on His journey to the house of the Jewish leader where others were already mourning and crying. There are some traditions where loss and grief is overemphasized by human crying and expressions of grief. Sometimes the dramatic expression of grief and mourning receives more attention than the comforting presence and words of family members and friends. Jesus made a statement that the young girl is not dead, but sleeping. The Savior spoke about the death of Lazarus, that His friend Lazarus was sleeping and that He will wake him up. Yes, Jesus had the power on earth to raise the dead, to awaken those who had fallen asleep. Jairus experienced the fruit of his faith. His daughter's life was restored. It is promised by the apostle that at the end time: The Lord himself with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of God's trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
