10 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD Celebrating 105 Years Continued from page 9 in our church except for Secretary, Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer. While his health has slowed him a bit, Joe Revesz still has that extra spark which compels him to continue to work at our church - even continuing to spearhead the efforts to keep our kolbász and hurka projects going. Again, while his health might be slowing him down a bit there nothing can slow his support for his church. Mention any sort of maintenance problem and Joe is right there to offer his expertise on how something could work better or look better. And if it happens to involve masonry, well you know that Joe has it covered. All Joe wants is to see our church succeed and with his effort it does! Then there’s another individual who when they coined the phrase “above and beyond” they had her name in mind. It’s fitting that she continues in the path of her late grandfather who was one of the founding fathers of our church. She’s been the Secretary of our church dating back to the early 70’s. She does the weekly Bulletins, coordinates the musical selections with our Organist and she makes sure the proper element covers are on the Lord’s Table for Communion. Additionally, she makes sure there are flowers in church each Sunday. She arranges the various holiday floral arrangements, handles family research questions such as researching birth and baptism certificates, who’s buried where in our cemetery. At one point for a few years while we were in between custodians in the 1970s she could be found cleaning the church every week. She’s been an Elder of our church. She was the third woman elected to the Consistory. She then became Secretary of the Consistory and finally Assistant Treasurer. That’s right - we’re talking about our “Ruthie” - Ruth Toth. When asked how she can continue at the pace she’s doing - her response is “Someone has to do it. I’ve been here too long not to know what to do. You see what has to be done and you do it.” These three individuals are only an example of why our church is a success. Add to this mix our Church Chat done by Earle Wittpenn, our Minister, Reverend Alexander Jalso and our wonderful Organist, Helen Dodds. A church is more than a few people but if the previous 6 people wouldn’t be at our church can you imagine where we’d be? We are also so grateful for our first female Assistant Chief Elder, Mrs. Helen Zoldos. Helen was able to do what only one other female in the history of our church did and that was to be elected as an Assistant Chief Elder on an all-male Consistory. A wise person commented recently “Your Church is a Committee All Unto Your Own - Made Up of Loyal Devoted Members.” He was right. The Bible teaches us that God created us with natural abilities and strengths. “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. ” (Romans 12:6-8) In receiving these gifts and abilities, we can choose to neglect them and pursue something that looks ‘better’ in our own eyes for personal gain. Or we can cultivate and give them back as our gift to our Giver - God. When it comes to long-term fulfillment, we know that the greatest satisfaction and joy in life comes when we discover and use our gifts and abilities as God intended. The above group of people - with God’s grace - is the key to the success of the First Hungarian Reformed Church of Homestead. We thank God for our faithful servants - that throughout their lives, they have discerned their talents and gifts and have chosen to give them in service to God and each other at our church, in building His Kingdom.
