CALVIN SYNOD HÉRÁI,D 5 One Lord, One Faith Some recent queries are very pertinent to the struggle that faces us in the UCC, and the point of our efforts in the Faithful and Welcoming Churches (FWC) to restore and reform our denomination’s holiness. With a return to our history, prior to the merger of 1957, the Constitution of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, note the section below: DOCTRINE 3. The Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are recognized as the Word of God and the ultimate rule of Christian faith and practice. 4. a. The doctrinal standards of the Evangelical and Reformed Church are the Heidelberg Catechism, Luther’s Catechism and the Augsburg Confession. They are accepted as an authoritative interpretation of the essential truth taught in the Holy Scriptures. b. Wherever these doctrinal standards differ, ministers, members and congregations, in accordance with the liberty of conscience inherent in the gospel, are allowed to adhere to the interpretation of one of these confessions. However, in each case the final norm is the Word of God. CONGREGATIONS 9. a. A congregation of the Evangelical and Reformed Church is a body of Christians accepting the standards of faith and doctrine prescribed in the constitution of the Church and organized and governed in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and bylaws. 1. It spells out pointedly the place of the Holy Scriptures, as the Word of God, in section 3 and at the conclusion of section 4.b. 2. It lists specific doctrinal documents as authoritative. Then, when the standards differ, a choice is allowed, but only to one of these confessions. 3. Congregations are required to accept these prescribed standards. The UCC stresses autonomy a priority, rather than faith and doctrine. Autonomy is not built not on covenantal unity but egotistical individuality that has brought upon us its libertine fruits and chaotic divisions. Rev. Albert W.
