4 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD CALVIN SYNOD UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST SIXTY-FOURTH ANNUAF MEETING MAY 21-24, A.D. 2002 SOMERSET, PA The Annual Meeting of Calvin Synod will convene in a Divine Service of Worship and Holy Communion, at St. Paul’s Church (UCC) in Somerset, Pennsylvania, assembling Tuesday morning at ten o’clock. Its daily sessions will be held at the Ramada Inn nearby, at the #10 Exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and conclude at noon on Friday. The Rt. Rev. Louis Medgyesi, Bishop, will preside at the meeting. All Pastors of the Synod, and those serving in its pulpits for regular weekly services, are expected to attend, unless excused by the Conference Council for necessity. Every congregation is expected to send a Delegate, and may also designate an Alternative, with due notice to the Synod of their election and with their authorization attested by the Chief Elder and Consistory Secretary. The form for this was sent to each church by the General Secretary and should be filed promptly, so assignments for committees meeting at the Synod can be made (please!). Local churches shall reimburse the room and meal expenses of the Pastor and Delegate. Travel will be reimbursed for those attending all sessions. A Constitutional Amendment was accepted on first passage by the Synod at the last Annual Meeting, and will be considered for final ratification this year: “Calvin Synod, consistent with ‘The Basis of Union and the Interpretations ’ that brought the United Church of Christ into being, which declared ‘Synods, conferences, associations and churches are to retain their present status until they are united by their own action and when mutually agreeable, ’ declares that Calvin Synod will continue as a Synod, under the policy and principles of presbyterial forms and usages, and without break in historic and doctrinal continuity. ” Classis assigned Committees are urged to meet prior to the Synod meeting and prepare the appropriate reports. It would be well for each chairperson to inform the Bishop of their committee’s status and progress. Room reservations at the special rate for Calvin Synod by the Ramada Inn must be made before May 1st, which is $59 plus 6% tax per night, either one or two per room. Call the Inn at 814-443-4646. Long range goals keep us from being disappointed by sfortrange failures. You can read just three chapters daily and five on Sunday, and dividing the 119th Psalm into eight parts of 22 verses, beginning the Sunday after Easter A.D. 2002. Put a dot in front of each week to measure your progress, a different color each year - you’ll surely read the Bible more than once!
