6 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD Calvin Synod Herald - Reformátusok Lapja iootí? Anniversary Hungarian Reformed church life in America stretches back to 1891, when our Cleveland and Pittsburgh churches were organized. Five years later, in 1896, the first Classis was organized. Just a year later in Bridgeport, CT, a Sunday School was organized, and a fulltime Summer School. Also, on August 1,1897, a Hungarian newspaper, the Orálló, a bi-weekly of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America, was published by the Rev. Sándor Kalassay, for just two years. In July of 1900 three Reformed ministers, the Revs. Zoltán Kuthy, Elek Csutoros, and Pal Konyha, met and decided to publish a church paper. In those days there were six Hungarian Reformed congregations in America, from New York to Cleveland. The pastors donated seventy dollars each for start up money, and thus a new weekly appeared as the Amerikai Magyar Reformátusok Lapja. The first issue was published in Cleveland, Ohio, with the Rev. Zoltán Kuthy its Editor, on August 15,1900. At first the paper was published weekly, then bi-weekly 1935-1958, monthly 1959-1973, and six bi-monthly issues since 1974. While it was in private hands initially, it was published for a lenghty period by the denomination, and along with the Presbyterians for a time. However, in 1963 the Synod assumed sole ownership. Initially it was printed solely in Hungarian, but English articles were included during the years 1963-1968, after which it became bilingual. Since 1971 the English portion was placed in the front for its English speaking reader. The name of the paper was changed in 1972 to Calvin Synod Herald - Reformátusok Lapja. It is presently printed in 1300 copies, and sent to 43 countries to reach our diaspore readers free of charge. Editors during the past 100 years were the Reverends: Zoltán Kuthy 1900 Elek Csutoros 1901 Sándor Kalassay 1901-1907 István Harsányi 1907-1917 Sándor Harsányi 1917-1924 Mihály Tóth 1924 Gyula Hankó 1925 Ödön Vasváry 1925-1926 Sámuel Horváth 1927-1929 Géza Takaró 1929 Dr. Gyula Melegh 1930-1936 Árpád Bernáth 1936-1937 István Böszörményi 1937 Dr. Sándor Tóth 1938-1960 Dr. László Harangi 1960-1963 Dr. István Szabó 1963-1968 Ferenc Vitéz 1968-1981 Pál Kántor 1981-1987 Kálmán K. Ludwig 1987-1988 Dr. István Szabó 1988-1999 Dr. Ferenc Vitéz and Albert W. Kovács, assistant editor, from 1999 to the present. Special supporters have undergirded it for years, including the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America, the William Penn Association, Pemco / Bela Köteles, and Miss Lenke Volosin, as well as regular advertisers. Typesetting/printing is done by Mrs. Cathy Paksi; computerized addressing is prepared by Mr. Fred Szabó the son, and the mailing is processed by Mrs. Violet Szabó, the beloved wife of our former Editor. The Calvin Synod Herald - Reformátusok Lapja is the oldest Hungarian Reformed church paper anywhere, including Hungary, continuously published for 100 years. The future of its service to the Lord of the church is in the hands of the readers and members of the Calvin Synod. It has thrived and survived for a century. Now it is up to the ministers and delegates of the Synod, and the elders and members of all Hungarian Reformed churches, to support the paper, that it may not die off while in our hands, but have a blessed and fruitful future in the hands of God’s people. /------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ JCSUS WIT RLL My Jesus is my Saviour, My hope, my life, my guide; Wly comforter, my keeper, Wly friend e’er by my side.
