CALVIN SYNOD HERALD- 7 -AMERIKAI MAGYAR REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA The alarming title-page picture in “The Economist" June 6, 1998 issue of the London Magazine. It needs no comment! It speaks eloquently for itself so close to the end of our most horrible century of World History. Floods in Sub-Carpathian Ukraine A chicken in every pot, two cars in every garage, a bomb in every backyard? The XXth Century - soon to be gone forever - was so precisely named “the Teenage Century” by the Rev. Dr. Robert Schuller. It is indeed a time for us to start an “Adult Century” in our history and to begin behaving like matured people! The worst floods in Eastern Europe since 1970 have devastated the Reformed region of Ukraine. The disaster struck with no warning from the authorities. The Tisza river broke through neglected embankments along the entire Ukrainian bank. In a few terrifying hours, the flood inundated Tecso, Visk, Huszt and Munkács. In Visk, 80 houses collapsed and 150 more were rendered uninhabitable. In the Nagyszőlős District, the settlement which suffered most, was Tiszaokeny. The embankment directly beside the community broke along an 80 meter strip. Some 71 houses were carried away and 100 more ruined. Hundreds of homes were destroyed in the other towns of the region. Totals of ruined homes reached into the thousands. Some 25,000 people have been displaced as winter approached and the soaked region froze. Everywhere the threat of epidemic looms and there is no clean drinking water. The lack of electricity and road connections aggravates the situation. Supplies are arriving from throughout the region, even impoverished regions. Ukrainian language congregations collected five tons of potatoes. The Hungarian government immediately gave aid worth $475,000. Let us all take our share! PEACE BE WITH YOU!
