CALVIN SYNOD HERALD- 6 -AMERIKAI MAGYAR REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA BISHOP'S REPORT 1999 Continued from Page 5 rector. As a retired police officer and detective, he has worked with youth for many years. His knowledge and experience are welcome additions to our overall youth program. I heartily recommend that he be approved to the post. Camp attendance has been steadily waning but the Calvin Synod church youth still comprise the major bulk of campers. We enjoy continued rapport with the Independent church youth as the camp experience is extended to gatherings and at the annual Youth Conference. Our only problem is receiving timely financial statements and cooperation with its audit. HUNGARIAN REFORMED CHURCH UNITY We are hoping our brothers and sisters in the American Hungarian Reformed Church would ratify the unity initiative at their meeting in November 1998. Apparently, the issue was never raised and seems to be in limbo at best.. SPECIAL THANKS Our Synod became the beneficiary of $12,346 from the estate of Mr. István Steve Balló. We used part of the amount to purchase a new computer for the Bishop’s office. We thank Mr. Victor Falk, the executor of the estate, for the generosity of this devout Catholic man who befriended Bishop Szűcs and honored the Calvin Synod with an unexpected gift. MISSIONS As mandated by the Synod, the Conference Council has distributed $4,719.14 from the Rossville Fund to Rozsnyó, Slovakia and an equal amount in support of the Transcarpathian Hungarian Reformed church. We are still holding onto the share earmarked for our sister churches in Vojvodina, Yugoslavia, until the current military crisis is resolved. Another $5,691.67 was sent to Transcarpathia as aid for the great flooding the region suffered in November 1998. We also received requests from Hungarian seminary students studying for financial support. Two special instances require noting: support to Miss Andrea Tacarova, a student sponsored by the Lutheran Church of Slovakia and Attila Bartha from the Carpatho-Ukraine who is sponsored through the UCC. Our support of these students offers an excellent opportunity for building bridges of good will and friendship with Christian brethren in other nations. $1,700 was sent to Miskolc, Hungary to help rebuild the plank church. At the same time, we responded with $1,500 assistance to our Church in Buffalo, New York. Such appeals from our smaller churches will be the norm. Let us be ready to take care of our own. SPECIAL APPEAL On July 21,1998, Rev. István Nyeste suffered burns in a single car accident. He was hospitalized for two months at Ohio State University Hospital. In late February of this year, his esophagus was removed and is still at OSU recovering from the surgery. He will be placed in a Nursing Home for therapy. He resigned from the pastorate in October. The Columbus congregation graciously extended the use of the parsonage to the Nyeste family until the end of June. Having amassed a sizable hospital bill, the Nyeste family is in dire need of help. Donations are welcome. The Conference Council sought fit to create a Bishop’s Emergency Fund in order to respond to immediate needs such as this. Please make checks payable to the Calvin Synod. The closing words disclosed the heavy itinerary of the bishop. Since all events were printed in our former Issues, we omitted the repetition of the same. ODD Solemn Declaration Presentation to Our Editor On June 1, 1999, our Calvin Synod presented an artistically-prepared Declaration for the work of our retiring editor, Dr. Stephen Szabó. The presentation Ceremony was scheduled for the SYNOD’S VACANT PULPITS Bridgeport, CT Columbus, OH Gary, IN Kalamazoo, Ml NORRIDGE, IL- Those interested in applying for these positions are asked to contact the Bishop -Ladies’ Aid Dinner-Occasion of First Church in Cleveland, Ohio. The official presentation was performed by the Rt. Rev. Louis Medgyesi, bishop. Warm and grateful words were said by Rev. Dr. Szabolcs Kálmán, Rev. Stephen Transfer of the Editorial Mantle As all reports printed in this present Issue of the Calvin Synod Herald indicate, our editor, in his advanced number of years, has finally entered into a well-deserved portion of retirement undisturbed. The Rt. Rev. Dr. Francis Vitéz - as new editor - takes over with the next issue of our oldest Publication just be-Géczy and Rev. Frank Endrei. Words of response were given by the celebrant. An artistic Hungarian Tart was prepared and donated by Rev. Csilla Géczy, with the significant words: “You Have Made Wonders in Our Midst". The Solemn Celebration will be long remembered and appreciated in the Household of Our Faith! fore the 100th Anniversary. It will be in the best possible hands of one of our former editors, who started his ministry in America on the side of the former editor and succeeded him as editor, and now again, has been reelected as his successor. (Előd-utód - Utód-előd). Rev. Albert Kovács will be his assistant editor, who was his right-hand worker in his bishoprical years. Ad Multos Annos!
