Pleasant, PA and was held in order to prepare for our annual Synod Meeting. □□□ Kosovo’s Problems Subdued NATO’s Birthday What was to have been a grand celebration of NATO’s 50th anniversary has been downgraded to a “commemoration”. This is a somber time, which calls for somber behavior. The heads of state, foreign ministers and defense ministers from more than 40 countries were to come to Washington. On Friday and Saturday nights, April 23rd and 24th, their spouses were scheduled to attend official White House and State Department dinners. Dr. Stephen F. Szabó, dean of Johns Hopkins University, son of our editor, was the commentator of the “Voice of America” transmission of this historic event. CALVIN SYNOD Conferences of the United Church of Christ Rt. Rev. Louis Medgyesi, Bishop CALL TO THE ANNUAL MEETING The Sixty-First Annual Meeting of the Calvin Synod Conference of the United Church of Christ MAY 11-14,1999 Somerset, Pennsylvania The sixty-first annual meeting of the Calvin Synod Conference of the United Church of Christ will be held from Tuesday, May 11th through Friday, May 14th, 1999. The meeting will open with a Service of Worship and Holy Communion on May 11th at 10:00 a m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Somerset. The meeting sessions will be held at the Ramada Inn. Following the Final Session and Closing Worship Service, the meeting will adjourn at 12:00 noon on Friday, May 14th. The attendance of each Ordained Minister with Standing in Calvin Synod is expected, unless excused. Each member congregation is expected to send a Lay Delegate, and may send an Alternate Delegate. (Please keep in mind that ministers may not come in place of the Lay Delegate, nor may a second delegate come in place of the minister if the pulpit is vacant.) Room reservations for the special rate for Calvin Synod at the Ramada Inn must be made prior to April 25th, 1999. Local congregations are responsible for the lodging and meals of delegates and the minister. Travel reimbursements will be made following Calvin Synod Guidelines. July 1-6, 1999 Providence, Rl The General Synod is formed by the elected representatives of the Conferences apportionately sent in by the former governing Conferences (in the former Evangelical Reformed Church, they were called Synods). The Synod name was only maintained by the General Synod, and Calvin Synod of the U.C.C. The Calvin Synod representatives of the U.C.C. at present are Rev. Zoltán S.
