CALVIN SYNOD HERALD- 2 -AMERIKAI MAGYAR REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA OUR 57th ANNUAL SYNOD MEETING May 23-27,1995 The Calvin Synod Meeting will be held May 23-27,1995 at the MARRIOT INN in CLEVELAND, OHIO, 4277 West 150th Street, 44135. The telephone number to call is (216) 252-5333. The fifty-seventh Annual Meeting of the Calvin Synod, Conference of the United Church of Christ, will be the constitutional meeting of our congregations with legislative, administrative and jurisdictional powers invested in our Synod for the benefit of all local congregations. All four classes of the Synod already had their preparatory meetings and passed overtures and recommendations to our Synod's in-coming voting delegates. The Synodical Council also had its meeting in preparation for the annual meeting in Pittsburgh. Some sober directives are therefore in order to the attention of the voting delegates. This year's meeting will be another historical meeting with the election of Synodical officers (now every three years) and the heavy agenda once again contains the continued merger problem with the other magyar church-body. When the former mother church, the E.& R. church, merged with the congregational churches into the U.C.C., our Synod was the only one (out of 34), to vote against the merger and the new constitution. "More powerto the people in the congregations" was the slogan. And dangerously so, more was given. We still stayed in the new church body! Why? First, because above the congregation's immediate power was invested in the Synod. (We are the only one that retained the name, the others are now Conferences). Secondly, because the Synod (or Conference) cannot be dissolved without its own consent! The much smaller Reformed Church in America always claimed that they are a Denomination, not merely a Synod. Let one fact never be forgotten: in the U.C.C., every Synod (Conference) is a Denomination by its power. Another welcomed new development. we will once again meet at a location of our constituting congregations, like we used to in the past. Our democratic system of church government operates through the balanced power of elected ministerial and lay delegates from our local congregations based in ten states in America. It is indeed extremely important that all lay delegates (one from each congregation) should accompany the pastor for this legislative meeting. The Bishop's usual letter with all the details was sent to all congregations. □ A Youth Conference will be held for the young people of our Hungarian Reformed Churches who are 12 years of age or over, at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Trenton, New Jersey, on Saturday and Sunday, May 6th and 7th. The theme for the conference is "Commitment." OUR MAGYAR SYNODS MOTTO: Traditions-embracing FAITH from the PAST, fervent HOPE for us in the PRESENT, in LOVE'S service for the FUTURE!
