CALVIN SYNOD HERALD . 6 -REFOMATÜSOK LAPJA A MEMORIAL FOR A MARTYR HUNGARIAN REFORMED MINISTER The Reverend Lajos (Louis) Gulyás, a young Reformed pastor in the village of Levél (in Northwest Hungary) was unexpectedly and innocently executed by the Communist government in 1957, for his participation in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. He left his widow and two small children behind. In commemorating him - and through him, other martyr pastors and seminary students - on October 23, 1994, in the village of Levél, the Trans-Danubian Synod of the Reformed Church of Hungary will dedicate a 60 cm by 90 cm bronze relief, created by Mr. Csaba Kúr, a Hungarian sculptor living in Ohio. We appeal to the Hungarian Reformed people living in America to adopt this relief-project as our gift to the memory of the martyrs. Let the people of Hungary realize that the ideals and the memory of the 1956 Revolution are very much alive amongst us here in America. We estimate that $7,000 will be needed to cast and ship the relief to Hungary. If enough of us respond to this call, the needed amount will be gathered. Any donations received that exceed the $7,000 needed, will be forwarded to the historical Reformed Kollégium of Pápa (just recently returned to the church from the government). We will suggest that if enough funds will be available, that a replica of the relief be placed in the Pápa Kollégium. The work on the relief has to start at once if we want to get it to Hungary by October of this year. The Hungarian Reformed newspapers will be notified of this drive. □□□ Qome remarks about our klerald from the Annual Report The Reformátusok Lapja is now 94 years old. Every copy, from the very first, has been preserved at the Széchenyi Library in Budapest, and a great many archives all around the globe. It happens to be the oldest still-existing publication not only in our own "household of faith", but also in the world of Magyars everywhere. God's predestination saved our paper twice: both times your present editor was used as a tool "in His hands". The first time was when our National Church body suddenly stopped the subsidy at the Denver General Synod as a retaliation for our victory in our battle for the continued Synodical existence. That period lasted exactly 5 years until finally a volunteer appeared in our Synodical sky in the person of our present ruling bishop. The second time occurred exactly five years ago to the day. We have been bi-monthly and bi-lingual and recently graduated to becoming "global" due to the tremendous changes in history. We have reached a record high in publication. Echoes of gratefulness are coming back to us form all corners of the world, especially from the leaders our sister Magyar churches living in the artificially created and still struggling Succession States in the Danubian Basin. One of the most characteristic ones came from the University of Debrecen's famous professor, Dr. Dezső Kárászon. He points out how unbelievably the life of our Synod and the present editor of the Lap/amelted together in the bygone halfcentury. We quote: "Igen összeolvadt az amerikai magyar gyülekezetek története a Fötiszteletü Püspök ur élettörténetével. Emberileg, az mondhatnánk: Tudta Ravasz László, kit küld ki. De még helyesebb ezt mondani: Tudta az Ur, kit hivott el." Ez a történelmi meg-állapítás önmagában elegendő fizettség minden izzadásért, amit Atyánk a jelentést-tevö Lap-munkásra rámért. I take comfort and pride in the fact that ourHera/cfin these past five years, being a bi-monthly, appeared bi-monthly and always on time. Our budget - despite of the ever-increasing printing and mailing expenses - remained healthy and has been working well! (by no means without some "proper prompting" now and then, here and there.) At this time, I do not recommend any changes in the hereby presented proposed budget for the following fiscal year of our paper. If ourGood God will continue His amazing grace over me, both physically and mentally, for which I am deeply grateful, so will I continue for a while yet the arduous work of editing and publishing our paper. There are still e number of unwritten important episodes of our life yet to be published by the present editor, otherwise, some of these will remain unknown forever. The Editor
