The Reformed Church in Hungary embraced the Presbyterian system without using that name, becoming totally a copy of the Calvin's Geneva Reformation. The "Presbyterian" was only used in Scotland, byjohn Knox. From there it was transferred to America. On the continent of Europe, none of the sister churches used it as a name. They are: the Reformed Church of France, of Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Hungary, etc. But in fact, they are all "presbyterian". Dutch Reformed is the closest to Hungarian. The "presbyterian" name is only used in the governmental meaning of the same. Presbytery is the elected governing body of the local church. (For same the Presbyterian church in the U.S. uses the term Session.) Sometimes the "presbytery" is also called "consistory", but it means the same thing. Synod is the governing body of the local churches. Classis is the smaller unit of the Synod in a particular geographical area. The Calvin Synod here consists of four classees: the Eastern, Central, Lakeside and Western. General Synod is the overall body of the four Synods in Hungary. The same name is used for the two Synods in Romania. In America, the U.C.C. General Synod is the top national organization, with no governing power. The governing power is invested in the "Conferences". The name has changed since the early E & R times, with the Hungarian Synod being the only one to retain the old name. In the Presbyterian Church in the U.S., the same body is called theGeneral Assembly and is given governing power. □ □□ □ □□ Official Notice
