Thoughts fibout Freedom Every year, on July 4th, thousands of people line up for hours at the National Archives building in Washington, D.C., just to catch a glimpse of the original document which talks about freedom. Now, more than two hundred years later, that great document is being celebrated by a grateful nation. It is good, in the darkness, to believe in the light. It is good, in the midst of tears, to believe in joy. It is good, in the midst of death, to believe in the life. It is good, in the midst of captivity, to believe in the liberty. Southern Baptists OK Anti-Gay Amendments The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination, amended its constitution to give the denomination the power to oust congregations that condone homosexuality. Southern Batist officials called the action unprecedented for the conservative, 148- year-old denomination. "It's the first (amendment) to deal with a condition of membership based on behavior." The statement, written in 1963, lays out Baptist beliefs about God, the Bible, evangelism and various church practices. It does not mention homosexuality. The 15.2 million-member denomination includes about 37,000 congregations. > 1 ... , ...................... ,,,,, . ■ ... The Synodical Council Members
