CALVIN SYNOD HERALD-2-REFOMÁTUSOK LAPJA Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the readers of Calvin Synod Herald - Reformátusok Lapja May you and those you lore be blessed by the power of Faith throughout the New Year! "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God." How we need the things impossible in this suddenly changing world in the remaining years of this last decade of this century before we enter the next, the Twenty-first?! §§ The American Hungarian Reformed Ministerial Association Meeting in Ligonier, Pennsylvania The ministers of our Hungarian Reformed Churches here in the United States gathered for their annual meeting on Labor Day, September 7, 1992, at our Bethlen Home in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. Twenty-five ministers participated. Following the communion worship service held jointly with the American Hungarian Reformed Presbyters' Association, our minister's meeting was opened by prayer by our President Rev. Alexander Forró. Our meeting heard a report by Chief Elder Stephen Szabó of the Hungarian Reformed church in America concerning the work of the Hungarian Reformed World Federation. Then Rev. Lajos Csémy, a Hungarian Reformed Theological professor in Prague, Czechoslovakia, shared about the life of the Reformed Church in that country. Rev. Béla Póznán of New York brought the report on the 1992 American concert tour of the choir of the Hungarian Reformed Kollégium in Kolozsvár, Transylvania. A great deal of good will was generated through this tour toward the Hungarian Reformed Church of Transylvania and of course toward the Kollégium itself as well. The income this tour generated throughout the U.S.A. and Canada was $134,511.32. The expenses were $76,787.87. Therefore the profit or net gain, was $57,723.45. This amount is being held here to be dispersed to the Hungarian Reformed Kollégium in Kolozsvár, Transylvania at the time that construction on their new school building is about to begin. Our renowned sculptor, Mr. Csaba Kur, presented a beautiful drawing of a memorial bronze sculptured plaque by which to commemorate Pastor Lajos Gulyás, a martyr of the Reformed Church, who was executed by communists in 1957. Our ministers wish to commemorate all of our martyrs in a single memorial plaque. Our Ministerial Association meeting continued Tuesday, September 8th with morning devotions, led by Pastor Joseph Vásárhelyi, who spoke on the texts Isaiah 45:15, 16 and Hebrews 4:14. the latter text says, "Since then we have a great High Priest Who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession." Frank Endrei held a brief remembrance of our ministers and ministers' wives who passed away in the last year or two. Bishop Dr. Andrew Harsányi spoke about life in the 17th century theologian, philosopher and pedagogue Comenius, who had taught at the Kollégium in Sárospatak as well. Dr. Gyula Boros, pastor of the Fasor-i Reformed Church in Budapest, showed numerous slides to illustrate the work of the Reformed Church in Hungary with the many refugees, with the increasing number of schools it now operates, and with its charitable institutions for the elderly and the retarded. He will be available until the end of this year to bring this presentation to our local congregations. Priscilla Hunyadi gave a report on the Youth Camp our churches held August 9 to 15 in Pennsylvania 14 congregations were represented from which 75 people came. It was a good conference with spiritual depth to it. Among the resolutions passed by the Ministerial Association the outstanding ones were: The Ministerial Association wishes to commemorate all the Hungarian Reformed ministers, presbyters and church members who died a martyr's death from 1944 to 1989. Final decisions concerning this bronze memorial sculptured plaque will be made at the 1993 meeting of our Association. The Ministerial Association expressed deep solidarity with Bishop László Tókés and those with him who have entered a hunger strike to demand the democratization of Romania and the honoring of the human rights of all ethnic groups there. This was to be communicated to ecumenical organizations and to our government in America. The meeting was closed by calling on the Lord in prayer. Frank A.
