Today, thanks to modern technology, it only takes seven days. Have you ever tried to select a hymn your entire congregation can agree on? Some folks like the old standards; others like to try something new. Just imagine the task of the UCC’s Hymnal Committee, trying to select a book of hymns an entire denomination will like. The committee has met five times. Over the next three years, they will meet in different regions of the country, holding an open forum in each region to solicit ideas and participation. Its first nine months have been devoted to listening to representatives from differing ethnic and cultural groups within the UCC. Our Synod’s Committee is participating in the work of preparation. James Crawford, pastor of Boston’s Old South UCC, chairs the committee. “We are nearly ready,” he says, “to agree on some internal benchmarks for measuring the theological integrity of texts.” The current timetable foresees the new hymnal being distributed by June of 1995. By November 1993, the contents of the book must be finalized. To contribute a suggestion, share an idea with the committee or even to send in a hymn, write: James W. Crawford, UCC Hymnal Committee, Old South Church, 645 Boylston St., Boston, MA 02116.
