CALVIN SYNOD HERALD- 2 -REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA CALVIN SYNOD NEWS MW*——» The Right Reverend Dr. Lóránt Hegedűs, the presiding Bishop of the General Synod in Hungary, has been in America from Aug. 29 till Sept. 17. Before the Ligonier days, on August 31 at 7 p.m. he preached in the West Side Hungarian Reformed Church in Cleveland; on Sept. 1, Sunday, he preached in the First Reformed Church in Cleveland in the morning Services; he was the guest speaker in Ligonier on the Presbyters’ Federation, on the Ministerial Association meetings and Bethlen Home days. On Sept. 8 he did preach in Allen Park. He was guest speaker at Hope College and Calvin Seminary and made a tour in the Canadian churches until his return to Budapest on September 17. He was with us a number of times before and we are extremely grateful to God for bringing him back to us in his new and highest capacity. He was our Number 1 friend before and now he was in reality the Number 1 Church-dignitary on a most friendly historic mission! During the Head-Bishop’s visit on the shore of Lake Erie in the shadow of the Great-Church at Cleveland two great ideas emerged for serious consideration: to bring one of the future World Conventions of the Hungarian Reformed churches here; and even the possibility of locating the permanent Headquarters of the new Hungarian Reformed World Federation at this “best location in the Nation”. This year the conference will be held at the Fairport Harbor Church and will be on the 29th of September. The theme for this year will be based on our churches need for spiritual renewal. November 10, Sunday at 4 p.m. is the time The annual Youth Camp was held again at the Mennonite Church Center in Laurelville, PA on August 11-17. There were 75 youth present with 15 of them in the Counselor In Training program. There were also 14 adult counselors beside the 2 Camp Directors and Nurse. This year’s theme was developed at the New Covenant UCC Church in McKeesport, PA, entitled, “Can I be a Christian in America?” Subtopics for Monday through Friday were; Moral Decline in America — presented by Rev. Albert Kovács; To be in the world, not of it — presented by Rev. & Mrs. Szabolcs Kálmán; Storms of Life — presented by Rev. Edwin Stern; Why do I need the church? — presented by Rev. Dr. Coralyn Medyesy; and Which way should I go? — presented by Rev. Zoltán Szűcs, Bishop. We wish to thank the main speakers for their time and effort in preparation and delivery of the message, and for traveling great distances in behalf of the campers. As the attendance statistics indicate, there were less adult counselors present than in past years. This fact was not lost upon the more experienced campers nor on the few counselors who found themselves in greater demand. In fact, this lack of adult responsiveness and selfgiving of time, talent, and experience was a significant complaint by some “veteran” campers. While Youth Camp is structured to introduce and reinforce faith in God, Biblical values, and Christian fellowship in a pastoral setting, there needs to be greater involvement by talented adults capable to feed divine principles to inquisitive young minds. In particular, the youth are asking for help in such relevant areas as Career Counseling, value judgements, coping for the twofold celebration with Solemn Anniversary Service and the installation of the new pastor, Rev. Szabolcs Kálmán. The Service will be followed by a great Banquet. Rev. Anthony Carter of Japan was lecturing in the U.S.A. On June 14 he was given a reception at First Church in Cleveland, where he was one of the former assistent ministers. He was ordained in that church in 1963 and still holds his ministerial status in Magyar Calvin Synod. (His daughter was just ordained by U.C.C. in California and will be added to the U.C.C. staff in Cleveland. with troubled family life, understanding cults and ways of countering their lure; and the approach to be made from a Biblical perspective. The youth are looking for a deeper experience of God in their lives and are asking for more indepth study of God’s Word as it relates to their experiences. We urge committed adult Christians in our churches to consider taking to heart the great opportunity to help the future church, our children and grandchildren, become responsible witnesses of Jesus Christ. We are particularly pleased that the two Hungarian Fraternal Insurance companies viz., The William Penn Association and the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America take to heart the financial support of the Youth Camp and are partners in the Christian education, nurture, and care of our children. We thank their generosity for making possible the many amenities our campers have come to enjoy over the years. And we thank the staff of the Bethlen Home for hosting the youth to a fine lunch and providing a learning experience among the residents of the Nursing Home. Youth Camp Director for Calvin Synod Rev.
