In the Eastern Classis the local churches joined together, as they have in the past, with other Hungarian Reformed congregations to sponsor the Hungarian Protestant Ball. Held on Friday, November 11, this was the 29th such Ball, the proceeds of which will go to a scholarship fund, benefiting college and graduate students of Hungarian background.

Lakeside Classis - A Thanksgiving Service commemorating the Birthday of the Calvin Synod will be held at the First Hungarian Reformed church of Cleveland, Ohio, on Sunday, March 12, 1989, at 10 a.m. The congregation extends an invitation to all to come and join in this celebration.

The Western Classis held a Classis Retreat on Friday and Saturday, September 30 and October 1, at the Tower Hill Camp, a retreat center belonging to the Chicago Metropolitan Associaton of the United Church of Christ. Located in Sawyer, Michigan, just an hour’s drive from Chicago, it was an ideal (and inexpensive) site.

At this first try at a “Classis Retreat”, some twenty participants joined us, representing the Flint, Kalamazoo, Gary, Whiting and Indiana Harbor congregations.

The theme being Bible-oriented in nature, the participants found it a welcome respite from both every-day life, and from the normal discussions about local church problems and situations.

Not all work, we found time to socialize around the fireplace in the evening, share about ourselves, and even play a little volleyball. A commemdable experiment for any Classis, we highly recommend it; we discovered that “old dogs DO like to try out new tricks”, and like the experience!
