A thousand people a day commit suicide, or about 500,000 people a year, with ten times that number attempting it. Hungary has the highest rate with 34.9 per 100,000 population. Czechoslovakia is next with 24.5; Austria follows with 22.2; Sweden with 22; Canada and the United States have 10.9 and 10.7 respectively. The Latin American countries have the lowest. Venezuela has 7.3 and Chile 3.1. Factors most commonly associated with suicide are bereavement, social isolation, chronic illness, psychotic disturbance, alcoholism and drug-addiction. — Christian Victory — □ The 47th Annual Meeting of our Calvin Synod is over. It was held on May 6-9, 1985 in Ligonier, PA. Only a few of our churches failed to be represented, and thus it was one of the best attended, most active and productive meetings of our Synod. At times we had as many guest and visitors as delegates. The meeting itself was characterized by a good balance of business and devotion, rest and work, worship and action. The Rev. Gerald M. Sanders, Exec. Director of UVV Biblical Witness Fellowship praised it for its open and confessional atmosphere, while others found it too long and disciplined. We praise God for all! □ Election of New Officers was, of course, foremost in the minds of many delegates. As Bishop Butosi’s second two-year term expired again and by constitutional rules could not be re-elected, the Synod chose the Rev. Zoltán Király, pastor of our Passaic church as the new Bishop. He has served in the Conference Council several times as secretary and treasurer. While Synod-Presbyter Frank A. Dudás was reelected for a second two-year term, the other officers were selected from among the younger pastors of the Synod. They are: Dr. László Medyesy (Wallingford, CT) as Auxiliary Bishop, Dr. Zoltán D. Szűcs (Lorain, OH) as General Secretary, and the Rev. Sándor A. Kovács (Munhall, PA) as Synod Treasurer. We pray for God’s gracious blessings on these our leaders. Paul Kantor was reelected as Editor of our Calvin Synod Herald — Reformátusok Lapja, while to the Board of the Directors of the Bethlen Home were elected — in addition to Dr. Eva M. Fabian, our representative on the Board of Managers — the delegates from the S. Norwalk, Pittsburgh, Cleveland West Side, and Lynwood churches. □ Upon the Recommendation of the Committee on Church and Ministry, the Synod granted Privilege of Call to the Revs. Raymond F. Kaiser, Steven G. P. Strickler, and Joseph Vásárhelyi. Provided that they present graduation from their respective seminary, ordination right was granted to Peter P. Bodor, András Czecze, Lie. Zsolt Takacs, while to the Rev. Andres P. Sholtes both Privilege of Call and ordination right were granted. In regard to the Rev. Stephan L. Nagy, the Synod approved the appointment of a committee (Dr. D. D. Parragh, Rev. N. Novak, Mr. E. Charles) to investigate the allegations and present the facts to the Conference Council for action. □ One of the highlights of the Synod meeting was undoubtedly the tribute payed to the late Dr. László Harangi at the Annual Synod Banquet. The magnificent essay of Auxiliary Bishop, Dr. Francis Vitéz, the beautiful citation, and the moving singing made the widow, Rozsa Harangi say: “Now was the time when we really buried him! □ The Ecumenical Tone of the meeting was indicated by our special visitors and guests which included not only “our” Rev. Imre Bertalan (Federation), Mr. E. Charles (Wm. Penn), Rev. P. Kovács (Bethlen Home), Rev. A. J. Molnár (Foundation), but also Bishop D. Abraham (HRCA), Rev. A. Jalso (Presb.), Rev. G. M. Sanders (BWF) as well as “special persons” from Hungary (Sándor Balogh, Elizabeth Horvath, Eva Petrőczi, Daniel Szabó). □ Special Features of the meeting included three presentations: Miss Sarah Butosi as UCBHM member reported on relevant issues of the Board of Homeland Ministries, Rev. Margaret L. Beretz as UCBHM secretary of Evangelism challenged us with the “Church Growth Covenant,” and Dr. L. Medyesy shared his Latin American trip through slides. Rev. B. Poznan read the report of his wife who represent us on UCBWM. □ One Major Achievement of the meeting was the completion of the revision of the Synod Constitution and By-Laws as well as that of the Classis By-Laws. Although this is only the first phase, as Bishop Butosi reported, the newly printed document will be a help to all! □ Some of the Resolutions are as follows: — The Bethlen Collection (Archives) became a Synod priority upon the recommendation of the Lakeside Classis. — $3000 was allocated to modernize the Bishop’s Office. — An overture to the 15th General Synod was adopted in regard to human rights and cultural freedom violations in Romania and Czechoslovakia. — Synod Appeals to Romania, Latin America were re-confirmed. □ Vacancy in Cleveland First Church: The Rev. Stephan L. Nagy resigned as pastor of our First Church in Cleveland, Ohio to be effective as of June 1, 1985. Interested persons must write to Bishop Zoltán Király as soon as possible (220 Fourth St., Passaic, NJ 07055. Phone: 201-778-1019) □ Still Vacant are: Buffalo, Dayton, New York City, Springdale in our Synod; and Phoenixville, Winnepeg, San Francisco, Port Colborn outside of our Synod. Argentina is also in dire nneed of a younger pastor-missionary. □ The Transfer of the Synod Treasury took place on June 19,1985 in Passaic, NJ where the new Conference Council also met. Thus from July 1, 1985 on, please, submit all payments to the new Treasurer: Rev. Sándor A. Kovács, 416 Tenth Avenue, Munhall, PA 15120. Phone: 412-461-3345 or 461-1184. □ Personal Notes: the Rt.
