CALVIN SYNOD HERALD — 2 — REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA CALVIN SYNOD NEWS While these lines are written, the sixth Assembly of the World Council of churches is discussing the theme, ’’Jesus Christ — the Life of the World’ in Vancouver, Canada. At least this is our hope and prayer! It would be disappointing if they would be more concerned about improving the WCC’s tarnished media image than to communicate the Word of God in a radically threatened world! Let us all pray that in our “global village” we Christians may be “the life of the World” in fellowship with Him! Another Important gathering was the General Synod 14 of our denomination held in Pittsburgh, Pa. on June 24—28. There were several decisions of positive nature: Carol Joyce Brown was elected secretary, the first woman to be named a UCC officer; youth and young adult ministries was adopted as a four-year priority; titles for lay ministry were changed in new bylaws; church members were urged to contribute at least 10% of their income to the church, and local congregations 25% of current expenses toward Our Church’s Wider Mission; the drive for world peace was reemphasized; resolutions to face women Issues, clergy crisis, environmental problems, etc. were adopted. Whether this is a matter of heresy and “status confessionis” for our churches (as some of our congregations feel), we should carefully consider at our forthcoming Synod meeting. — Strictly from our Synod's perspectives, we rejoiced with Mrs. Elizabeth Kecskemethy who was honored at the Women's Celebration as our Woman of the Year; we also congratulate to Mrs. Helen Beretz and Miss Sarah Butosi for their election as corporate members of the UCBWM and UCBHM respectively; unfortunately Mrs. Suzanne Virgulák was defeated by 21 votes in her bid for the Executive Council by a black woman. Our delegates (Rev. A. Elek, J. Poruban.Dr. F. Vitéz, Bishop Butosi) faithfully attended the sessions and are ready to report on GS14 to any group. Let us start preparing GS15! Congretions are urged to submit nominees, resolutions, suggestions! The Conference Council met on June 15—16, 1983 in Woodbridge, NJ. The considered matters include: The Rev. Dr. Francis Vitéz tendered his resignation as pastor of the John Calvin Magyar Ref. Church of Perth Amboy, NJ as of July 31. He also asked the Magyar Ref. Church of Rossville to grant him a two-year sabbatical beginning Aug. 1. The Rev. Joseph Posta was elected pastor of our Kalamazoo, MI church on June 12, 1983. For the Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Szabó who retired from our Cleveland First Church on March 24, a testimonial banquet is planned for Sept. 18, 1983 in Cleveland, Ohio. Rev. Frank S. Juhasz is on sabbatical leave until Oct., 1983. The Rev. L. E. Smith is substituting. Oar next Synod meeting is scheduled for May 21—24, 1984 probably at Ligonier, PA. Mark Ministers retreat is planned for Nov. 14-16, 1983 probably in Cleveland, OH. It is important that all ministers be present! In Caracas, Venezuela the congregation elected the Rev. Attila Knuth Szilas from Denmark as its new pastor. We will publish Bishop Ravasz Laszlo’s book, “Hazafelé”, provided the copyright can be cleared, as an individual sponsor gave $3,000. Council urges Synod Appeals (So. America, Leprosy Mission, Szabó Mária Memorial, undesignated gifts). Council urges our classes to collect material and discuss issues related to the committees which are assigned to each classis. IN COLUMBUS, OHIO the bishop had a consultation with the consistory on June 29. In due process, the congregation elected the Rev. Paul Kántor (Faiport Harbor, OH) as their new pastor, succeeding Rev. Stephen Nagy who served as administrator at the July 24 meeting. The Kántors plan to be in Columbus by September 1, 1983. Thus Fairport Harbor becomes vacant, interested persons are to write to the Bishop as soon as possible, but not later than September 1, 1983. The consultation should take place in the congregation within a month. IN McKEESPORT, PA. June 26 was a memorable day: on that day both the First E and R Church of McKeesport and the First Hungarian Ref. Church of Rankin, Pa. unanimously voted to form a new church. The following worship service and fellowship luncheon celebrated this event with genuine joy and thanksgiving. The Synod was represanted by Bishop Butosi, Deputy Bishop Vitéz, Dean Elek, J.Poruban GS14 delegate. May God bless Pastor, Dr.E.M. Fabian and the new congregation! IN PERTH AMBOY, NJ the John Calvin Magyar Ref. Church bid farewell to the Rev.Dr. Francis Vitéz who served them for 28 years, on July 10 with a “retirement dinner”. Bishop Butosi was among the speakers. There were more than 20 ministers present. Dr. Vitéz left Perth Amboy for California on July 22. THE SYNOD TREASURY was transfered on June 29 to the new treasurer Rev.Zoltán Király, 220 Fourth Street, Passaic, NJ. 07055. Please, contact him in all financial matters! THE COMMITTEE on Church and Ministry recommended to grant “Privilege of Call” to the Rev. Béla Poznan, pastor of the church at Györke, Czechoslovakia, who appeared before the Committee on July 18, 1983 in Bridgeport, CT. — Council consented.
