OH LORD

Remind us that in simplicity there is beauty; and in beauty, Oh Lord, we find your main handiwork.

Remind us too, Oh Lord,

that to be free is a constant responsibility

of a free people.

Remind us, too, Oh Lord, that a free government is the most difficult to comprehend

and the most difficult to function.

Yet, Oh Lord remind us that it is the best yet devised by man.

Please give us the insight to understand and appreciate

this simple fact. Amen

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING

Last November, more than 10,000 persons lost their lives when cyclonic winds and rain struck the State of Andhra Pradesh in Eastern India resulting in floods and tidal waves which devastated the cities and villages of this coastal area. The cyclone — the Indian Ocean equivalent of a hurricane — was the worst natural disaster to hit India since 1864, when 35,000 persons were killed by a tidal wave!

When last November’s cyclone hit, CASA, the Church Auxiliary for Social Action of the Indian Council of Churches, immediately sent in emergency teams which helped to provide relief.

Originally the director of CASA asked for an immediate $10,000 from the worldwide ecumenical community, but he has now identified the need for $500,000! The United Church Board for World Ministries made an immediate $2.000 available to CASA through Church World Service. Church World Service itself sent one million waterpurification tablets and also blankets and clothing in its initial shipment.

The One Great Hour of Sharing, which most U.C.C. congregations will observe this year on March 5th, provides for such immediate first response to emergencies — worldwide — whenever they occur. Additional aid is then provided as over-and-above gifts are directed by congregations and church members. Note that while there are some remaining long-term needs, Church World Service has nowr officially closed its appeal for help to the Johnstown. Pennsylvania, flood victims.

NEW IDENTITY

A new listing. United Church of Christ Identity Materials, is now available. Prepared by the Inter-Agency Evangelism Committee, the pamphlet contains listings on U.C.C. History and Heritage, Faith and Ministry, and Mission, as well as an annotated list of diverse U.C.C. publications. Designed for both clergy and laity, the brochure has wide use for many local church needs. Copies may be ordered from the Inter- Agency Evangelism Committee, Room 908, 287 Park Avenue South, New York, N.Y. 10010, for 15 cent or 10 cent each for 10 or more copies.

The Inter-Agency Evangelism Committee is a coordinating body with staff representation from all nine national offices and agencies of the United Church of Christ. Efforts in evangelism and other activities are shared through this Committee with a view to eliminating duplication in national programming.
