2 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD OFFICIAL COMMUNICATIONS The thirty-sixth annual meeting of The Calvin Synod Conference of UCC held April 29—May 2, 1974 at the Holiday Inn, Ligonier, Pennsylvania had the representation of four Classes, 38 local churches with 31 pastors, 24 church delegates, total 55, also 33 guests attending. 1— THERE WERE TWO WORKSHOPS WORKING IN TEN SMALL GROUPS: a) —“Quo Vadis Synod,” Rev. Aaron Elek speaker. A thorough discussion was given to such topics as the “Plan for Union” with the Free Hun­garian Reformed Church; Our relationship to the Mother Church in Hungary, also towards the Denomination; Our Mission towards our Hungarian Rrethren in the Diaspora. b) —“Quo Vadis Congregation?”, Mr. John Nemes­nyik speaker. Local congregations must take into consideration the youth concerning their planning of the future. Our Hungarian Re­formed heritage can be helpful in strengthen­ing and advancing the spiritual welfare of our youth. Relocation must be done where it is needed and feasible. 2— MINISTERIAL MATTERS: a) —Privilege of Call was granted to Rev. Andrew Hamza and Rev. Paul Kovács; b) —Mr. Anthony Szilágyi, Jr. of Fairfield, Conn. was granted premission for ordination; c) — Chaplain John A. Szilvássy and Rev. Leslie Carey’s request for status in our Synod will be acted on after their transfer from their present affiliation; d) — Student John Vincze was placed in our Synod care; e) —Mr. Joseph Benedek was granted transfer to the Western Association of N.Y. Conf. 3— ECUMENISM & DIASPORA MISSION: a) —“Diaspora News” from now on will be publish­ed in Ref. Lapja & Magyar Egyház; b) —The Council will petition the Executive Coun­cil to give Basic Support credit for donations designated to Hungarian Reformed Ecumene work; c) —The Ecumenical Committee is authorized to prepare Missionary István Csákány’s itinerary here if it’s feasible. 4— FINANCIAL MATTERS: a) —The Administration quota per church member was raised to $2.25; b) —The Travel Fund quota per church was raised to $125.00; c) —Compensation for travel expense was raised to 12«1 per mile; d) —Honorarium for Synod Officials was raised by 20%; e) — Subscription rate to Ref. Lapja was raised to $3.50 for congregations, $5.00 for individuals effective July 1, 1974. 5— ELECTION TO THE BOARD OF BETHLEN HOME’S DIRECTORS:-Dr. J. Bütösi of Eastern, Rev. I. Kovács of Central, Rev. L. Becske of Lake­side, Dr. A. Ludwig of Western Classis, Rev. Mrs. C. Medyesey of Gary, Ind., Dr. L. Berzeviczy of McKeesport, Pa. Alternate: Rev. V. Orth. Elected to General Synod ’77 — Joseph Tegze. 6— PROPOSED CHANGES IN UCC CONSTITU­TION: a) —Vote on editorial changes — Yes; b) —On Substantive changes, including Par. 33 — Yes; c) —Specific Substantive Amendments — No. 7— MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTIONS: a) —There will be an Ecumenical Bicentennial Com­mittee set up. b) —The Synod Council is to seek a satisfactory solution for pastor’s pension. c) —Our Relationship with the Reformed Church in Hungary and Central Europe will be studied by a Special Committee (Bütösi, Vatai, Par­­ragh, Orth, Piri, Böszörményi). d) —The Hungarian Reformed Ministers’ Associa­tion is to be asked about the practice still in effect or not of consulting the Synod in election of its officers. e) —The Synod approves the actions taken by the Council in an attempt to establishing the United Hungarian Reformed Church and au­thorizes the Council to continue taking steps toward reaching this goal and working out details for the desired union. f) —There shall be appointed a Special Advisory Committee on Church Relocation & Ext.
